Roald Dahl’s Going Solo Review by Sebastian Pillinger
This is Roald Dahl’s autobiography on how his life was in the R.A.F, it’s brilliantly written as you would expect from such a talent as Roald Dahl is. Roald Dahl has written many great books and this one is no exception.
He tells the story of his life during the Second World War, where he was an aircraft pilot in North Africa. It is full of many breathtaking events, and at one point his plane comes down and he nearly dies.
It is a brilliant book that I can’t resist to put down, and I just had to keep reading and reading. He’s an amazing writer and is a genius with words. It’s the kind of books that I would suggest twelve year olds and above get into. It’s a thrilling book full of events and I strongly recommend it to any reader. He has a way of making you think you were there with him as he describes how he watched his colleagues being shot down by German Ju88’s.
I’d most certainly without a doubt put it in the top five books I have ever read. He has also written another autobiographical book of when he was a child and how his life was growing up which is another excellent book. Going Solo is a very easy read although it leaves you at the end of the book wanting more with an ending that doesn’t quite finish it as well as it should although don’t let this put you off it. He has a very good memory of the events which occurred. Also every couple of pages he includes a letter that was written back to his mother while he was in the war.
Overall it is a great read – 5 Stars

Why did you put this under autobiography?!
Great. Have you ever read, “Reach for the Sky” by Douglas Baader (Badder?) or “The Dam Busters”?
They are two great books – Doug was an RAF pilot who lost both legs, right above the knee and left below in a crash in the 30’s. He was put out of the RAF, but returned before the Battle of Britain. The Dam Busters is the story of the Lancs that bombed the Ruhr dams and then went on to drop the long toms.
I’m excited at the prospect of reading Roald Dahl’s going solo. I think Dahl is a great writer, especially like the Witches, George’s Marvelous Medicine, Matilda, The BFG, and others.
I have his book Going Solo: The Thrilling Sequel to Boy Puffin Books 1996
Having died in November of 1990 at age 74, Dahl worked for the Shell Oil Company in Africa at age 18, which is where Going Solo begins. Although raised and educated in England, he was born in Wales of Norwegian parents.
A colorful and exciting autobiography, Dahl’s Going Solo tells of exciting stories and adventurous exploits. A sequel to Boy, Dahl explores African safaris and has encounters with the African military. The book gives advice on avoiding and nursing snake bites, and shows “what not to do if you find yourself in a lion’s mouth”!
