A Bad and Stupid Girl by Jean Mcgarry
The story of Siri and Esther, freshmen roommates at a Catholic college in Boston, MA who change each other, for better or for worse.
What happens when two opposite girls are paired together their first year of college? This novel explores the issues of two teenage girls who are opposite in intelligence, but learn from each other all the same. Esther is on scholarship, while Siri is a legacy admission. She’s got all the money she needs to buy books and then some. Her mother went to the college and it’s also where she meets Siri’s father. Siri is sick of her hometown boyfriend, Christo, but he still spends time with her little brother, Teddy. Siri doesn’t like it, but that continues to happen anyway, even after she and her boyfriend break up. The two girls don’t know what to major in, but Siri thinks she’ll be a philosopher, after Esther shows her how to “think.” Esther eventually decides to major in English and towards the end, minors in music. Esther is hopeless as a music minor, but she becomes a robot, practicing piano when she can, after getting off work in the cafeteria. A romantic relationship starts to develop between the English major advisor and Siri, though there’s definitely a hint of it between Esther and Dr. Farrand as well. Siri notices that Esther is in love with Farrand and tries to stop it, only to find herself in the middle of something she couldn’t stop if she tried.
