America Unchained

A book review of Dave Gorman’s America Unchained.

America Unchained

America Unchained is a book by British comedian Dave Gorman.  He has had a few TV shows and written several books about his adventure.  They all follow just about the same kind of format.  He comes up with a wacky idea.  However, unlike the rest of us he carries it out.  Like, if one day you wondered if you could wear a cardboard box for a week, thought about it, but never did it.  Or if you ever wondered if you could take a pedalo across the channel, or  life off marshmallows.  The kind of thing you might wonder about, or even dream about doing for fun, but never do.  Well, Dave Gorman is the kind of man who does the funny things we might think of, but never do.

In America unchained, Dave has just ended a tour of the USA, whereas he has become upset by the soulless chain stores, hotels and cafes of America.  So, he goes to the USA and attempts to cross from the East coast to the west cost, without using a chain.  Not even to fill up on fuel!

The thing that makes this book, and all his books a really great read, is not the idea of the book, but the way in which he approaches and write about everything.  Let me give you can example.  Someone wanting to take a long journey would want a reliable car, with good fuel efficiency.  However, for the authentic experience Dave buys an old car, with quite the opposite in regards fuel efficiency Hilarious consequences ensue.

Aside from the feeling you get that Dave is completely genuine about his question, and the humor with which he writes the real pivot of this book is the people.  Dave is able to give a truly personal look at everyone he meets and talks to.  This really draws you into their lives, and makes every moment of the book a joy.  Its just so honest, and so intimate, you can help but enjoy it.
