An Overview of My Novel Broken Candle

Here is a short description of my first novel.

This story chronicles the early days of Marianna Faigon from her privileged life in Maine to her status as a refugee and orphan. After a feeling of tremendous dread, Marianna follows her parents to the lab, where she witnesses her mother’s murder by her father’s business partner and friend, Doctor Everett Brown. Hearing her mother’s voice she tries to escape, but an explosion occurs and she is buried under the rubble. She is soon rescued and taken to the hospital where she lies in a coma for several months. Once she awakens she fears Brown may target her next, so she hides her identity by using a false name.

She is then adopted at the age of twelve by an upper class New Egland family for a new beginning. Trying to put her past behind her, Marianna takes the name Aurora, after the girl who was the true victim of the lab explosion, but the tragic death of her mother comes back to haunt her. Hearing Josephine’s voice in her head, she feels as if she is going mad.

Living with Patrick and Kristin Stevens seems fine at first, but Mary soon learns of the tremendous power that lies within her. For a time she is able to hide it until one day Kristin walks in on her nursing a injured bird who has a broken wing. The blue glow surrounding Marianna sends Kristin into a frenzy.

Marianna can’t believe she has done anything wrong, but Kristin locks the child in the closet, hoping to drive the evil away. Suffering from claustrophobia, Marianna lashes out and transforms into the very thing Kristin fears. So comes the first casualty of many down the creature’s path.

Marianna flees the house that is now engulfed in flames. Freedom comes at a the price of a soul. She takes to life on the street, picking pockets, taking to prostitution and living in an abandoned building. Marianna soon meets up with a young man named Peter Briggs, who partners up with the now thirteen year old Marianna.

Fate soon rakes a twisted turn when Marianna comes face to face with the man who killed her mother. Doctor Everett Brown’s main target was Marianna all along. Disguising himself he gains the upper hand and injects Marianna with a drug that knocks her out. After falling unconscious she is whisked away.

At Doctor’s Brown’s lab, a series of experiments are preformed on the unsuspecting teen, and a new persona is cast. Shadow, an agent of death, who feeds on the blood of others.

Soon, Carla Benson, Brown’s unwitting assistant stumbles onto the true identity of her employer’s new minion and steps in to rescue her, but without the drugs, Marianna nor Shadow can no longer function. A new personality emerges, one more terrifying than both Marianna or Shadow. A creature named Seircy. She is bent on destroying them both and taking over the body permanently. Josie, Marianna’s mother, whose mind is trapped inside her and helps both Shadow and Marainna to defeat Siercy in an intense mind battle.

The situation is so taxing that Marianna’s body lay catatonic for more than a year. Carla takes her to the mountains, hoping the solitude and fresh air will heal her.

Almost a year passes before the slightest change occurs. First, a tear then the jerking of a hand, until one night an explosion of power of Shadow’s screams jostles Marainna into reality.

But will this Broken Candle ever be healed? To burn bright into the night without inhibitions.

Follow young Marianna on her journey: one of joy, tragedy and uncertain madness.
