Animals in Quotes

Some notions on what some great minds thought of animals.

The animal is so “self-contained and placid” was said as Walt Whitman observed them. Perhaps it meant that they appear to be at peace with the rest of nature and need not bother with upsetting the nature that surrounds them. There are not preoccupied with how to take advantage of nature’s resources and then worry about how to restore them or try to keep the scales from tipping into ecological chaos. It can be said they have their own quiet dignity which man can only envy as he itches to maintain his position of power and depossess others who are less fortunate materially.

Even Voltaire who was a respected philosopher among the royal houses of Europe at Frances’ peak siad that they are not worried about people’s opinions and that may be good for someone who always lacks a backbone because he is afraid of what people think of him. “They know nothing of future evils” was another observation of together the  first which he said that people emvied. True one can feel terribly sorry for the husky that entrusts himself to serving his master and unknowingly gets shot along the way because the owner decided to’save money’ as has happened recently in Canada because bookings dropped. There would have been adoptive homes.

Martin Buber may have observed something of great intelligence when looking in their eyes. It is as if he referred to some behavioral patterns, which we are only beginning to observe. He used the words “power to speak a great language” and that could be taken to refer to a window onto which we can imagine what they are thinking.

Jean Cocteau referred to how each person could be as blind as the next by just praising each other’s pet for its best qualities and one is little short of being blind in assuming that his animal is “the most outstanding” compared to the next. Who are we to be able to effectively judge how our beasts are better or worse but there are many who think that the breeding which gave them their pet selected for the best qualities.
