Approaches in Literary Criticism

Guide for criticizing a literary piece.

Biographical

The author is the first thing that should be known in a literary piece. It’s not enough that the reader the name or the list of the works of the author.

Historical

This includes the analyzing of texts based in the aspects that makes the literary piece known.

Classicism

Different, unique and has its own point of view. This came from Greece before Christ was born.

Humanism

This focus on the people or humanity. From this point of view, only people who stepped foot in school, and recognise by culture are the ones that can be called civilized.

Romanticism

Romanticism was born in Europe. This is known as an activism during the development time of science and philosophy in the world.

Realism

Reality is more important than beauty. This is the view that realists fought for.

Formalism

This is all about discovering, and explaining things through literature.

Socio-Analytic

People are working only to have a good life.

Existentialism

This is all about freedom and authenticity.

Feminism

This approach believes that the women as an individuals is not in the same level as men.

Imagery

Its goal is to visualize completely the topic.

Naturalism

It explains things that are related to philosophy or doctrine about biological and sociological things in the environment.

Sociological

This is about the situation of the social institution like government, family, and school.
