My essay about Beginner’s Luck from the novel the alchemist, or just in general.
Have you ever wondered why it seems that the first time you do something you seem to be the winner, is there even such a thing as “beginner’s luck”, it might seem unclear in this novel exactly if there is or isn’t. Throughout the novel there has been many different experiences and struggles that Santiago has faced, but it seems that his whole goal or personal legend has been one game, and he was the on the benefit of “beginner’s luck”, and he gave everything to complete his personal legend, it could be a possibly that if you desire something beginner’s luck occurs the first time you do something.
In the novel, King Mechizedek explains the principle of favorability or “beginner’s luck”, it shows up many different times in the novel, each time Santiago goes through a certain even that seems to be a crisis or dramatic event that should never happen but it does, it turns out that was planned out on purpose to get Santiago to the next part of his personal legend. One part in the novel where it seems that his luck is at the worst, is when he meets a young boy when he arrives in Africa. The boy says that he’ll “help” him get to Egyptian pyramids, and Santiago trusts him and gives him his money, this turns out be a trick and the thief runs off with all his life savings, this leaves Santiago with no money, in the middle of Africa and no sheep. After Santiago gets over the fact that he is left with nothing, he finds a crystal merchant and then works for him, but while he is working for him, the business of crystal selling booms and the crystal merchant starts to make tons of money. This is one form of beginner’s luck for Santiago because the thief first thought to be bad, leads him to the crystal merchant where he learns more about personal legend’s and gets all his money that he lost and more back, which leads him to his next step to accomplishing his personal legend. The crystal merchant that is the owner of the shop teaches Santiago about his personal legend and how he just forgot it, and did not accomplish it, which was the worst decision of his life he said, but he said that Santiago must reach his since its not too late to do so. This leads him to the next part of his journey, with the money he has made he uses it to go to an expedition and join a group of people that are going to cross the desert, he buys a camel and all the necessary equipment that is needed to make such a journey.
Santiago during the whole novel seems to always being trying to his best to reach his final goal of accomplishing and getting the treasure of his personal legend, no matter what the obstacle is, it seems like he goes through everything and more that could’ve popped up in his way to get to his goal. But, throughout all the bad times and good times of his journey he never quits or fails to do, he thinks at one point that his mission was impossible in the first place to ever think of, but the people he meets along the way keep him on the same path and towards his goal. The alchemist in the form of different people or objects help him find the courage to keep on going until the end, which leads to him to keep desiring his goal which means that beginner’s luck is still on his side. Without beginner’s luck, his personal legend would’ve been impossible to accomplish but it stays with him the whole journey and even though it looks like its against him, it turns out that it was for the greater good or reason why that bad thing happened. Santiago’s family thinks of him to be a priest and when he was young he went to school to study to become a priest, he thinks away from his family’s impression to as he “has” to be, and wants to become a shepherd, to travel the world and learn about all the different cultures and people around the whole world. It seems that everybody is against Santiago in the novel, with all the bad luck things happening to him, but in the end it turns out to all be for the good bringing him to next part of his goal, and even when it seems like his luck is at the lowest he still desires and keeps going for his personal legend.
Santiago’s personal legend and beginner’s luck fall hand in hand, without his legend to complete he wouldn’t need the luck, but without beginner’s luck there’s nothing to use it to do. The beginner’s luck in this novel really affects his personal legend, by giving him the edge of the whole universe and everybody with him other than against him to reaching it, it may seem like everybody and thing is against him, but since he has beginner’s luck on his side, everybody is on his side as well. The Alchemist in this novel shows up in different forms one is him being himself, the other is the King of Salem, which are major parts to Santiago’s journey and beginner’s luck. When the Alchemist is in the form of the King of Salem, he first tells Santiago about beginner’s luck, and about personal legends and why is that he is speaking and telling Santiago about all of this. He gives him some help as to where his personal legend is, and how to reach it, but he has to let Santiago figure most of it out. When the Alchemist is in the form of himself in the desert, he lets him know even more information about personal legends, and helps him not to get his hopes down, he journey’s with him until where it is Santiago’s job to finish his personal legend and learn the true meaning of the soul of the world.

Throughout the novel all the different experiences and struggles that Santiago has faced, lead to one final goal, him accomplishing his personal legend, and how he could not of done it without beginner’s luck, and finally that beginner’s luck only was only on his side for him accomplishing his goal, because of one reason, him desiring to succeed to completing him personal legend.
