Big Success or Big Failure
Comparing the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" to the movie.
“To Kill A Mockingbird” takes place in an old southern town called Maycomb. The main character in the novel and movie is a young girl named Scout. She lives with her older brother Jem, their father Atticus, and their cook Calpurnia. Jem is an athletic boy who one day dreams of becoming a football player for his school. Scout is an intelligent boyish character. Atticus a lawyer and the only living parent of Jem and Scout. Racism plays a huge part in the novel an movie. Throughout the novel a series of unfortunate events occur.
The title “To Kill A Mocking Bird” refers to the amount of racism that the small town possesses. In the town it was considered a sin to kill a mockingbird. Mockingbirds only make lovely music and do not harm people in any way. It is considered a sin to harm any living creature regardless of race and color. Atticus said that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird to Jem and Scout when they received air rifles from their uncle, Jack. It was the first time that Scout heard Atticus say that it was a sin to do something.
There are some differences between the novel and the movie. The novel has some scenes that the movie does not. On the other hand the movie has some added scenes. There was a scene in the movie when Bob Ewell went up to Jem and Scout when they were inside Atticus’s car and tried to frighten them, at the time Atticus was inside the Robinson’s house reporting news about Tom Robinson. This scene never occurred in the novel. Another thing is that in the novel the aunt’s name is Rachael but in the movie her name is Stephanie. Lastly, two scenes that I was looking forward to was the church scene and the one when Dill ran away from home and Scout found him under her bed.
The best part of the novel is when Jem and Scout get attacked by Bob Ewell on their way back from the school pageant. Scout finally gets to meet Arthur “Boo” Radley.
In the beginning of the movie I found it a little plain and started to lose interest. Black and white movies, not so interesting.
My overall opinion, the book was a big successes but the movie was a big failure.
