Black Rabbit Summer by Kevin Brooks

Friendship is a good thing. Friends can easily come, and friends can easily grow apart. That’s what happened to Pete and his friends. They grew apart, and now they want to meet up one last time before going their separate ways.

Pete, is not doing anything on his summer holiday.  Basically he just sits at home, except when Nicole calls him and asks if he wants to hang out with her and the rest of the gang in their den out in Back Lane.  Pete accepts Nic’s offer, and asks if he can bring his friend Raymond.

Raymond, and this might sound a little weird, is in love with his black rabbit that he has as a pet, but he thinks it talks to him.  The rabbit says things like, ’fine weather this evening.’  Everyone thinks that Raymond is weird because of this, but Pete loves Raymond (as a friend) nonetheless.

After the gang goes to their den on Back Lane they were going to go to the local Carnival.  Nic, Eric, Pauly, Raymond, and Pete all bring alcohol and drugs to have a good time in the den.  After everyone is drugged up and drunk, they go to the Carnival where we the town celebrity, Stella.  Stella is going around with Raymond, mocking him,  but Raymond doesn’t really care.

At the Carnival both Stella and Raymond turn up missing.  But, since Stella is the town celebrity her missing is all over the news and Raymond’s is not.  His parents, who we are told to be cold and heartless, don’t report him missing for quite sometime.  The English police start the investigation and find Stella’s naked body in a lake.  Her clothes are behind a bush, and her blood is on some guys trailer.  The police think Raymond did this because they have evidence that they both went missing by the portaloos.

Pete is the only one who doesn’t believe that Raymond didn’t murder Stella.  While the police talk to him, Pete constantly doesn’t give them all the information.  Even his Dad, who is a police man but he’s not on the case because Pete is involved in it, knows it.

In the end Raymond is never found, but Stella’s killers are.  Out of the whole gang, who do you think killed her?  Read the book and find out :D

Overall I thought this book was good.  It was a page turner at some points.  Its set in England, probably in a town a hour away from London in from 2005 to present time.  I’d recommend this book to almost everyone.
