Book Review: Death of a Highland Heavyweight

Another Seaglass Mystery from Hum Harbour, Nova Scotia.

When Highland Games Heavyweight Champion Claude Oui is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, his wife is overcome with grief. As head of the town’s annual Hum Harbour Daze festival, she cannot plan a funeral and keep up with her responsibilities to the town, so Gailynn dutifully steps in. But she can’t keep her nose out of the murder investigation. Amidst choosing bridesmaids dresses, assembling a big top tent, and advising teenagers in love – one of whom just might be a murderer – Gailynn is once again caught up in the town’s hidden secrets as she races to solve Hum Harbour’s latest crime spree which includes the theft of frog figurines.

Gailynn is a likeable character. She is a naive and curious young lady who can’t help but involve herself in the investigation of the crimes of Hum Harbour. Her brother is the investigating police officer who finds his sister a nuisance and her theories improbable. But the reader can’t help but love Gailynn. The beach setting adds a romantic aura with vivid description that brings you to Canada’s east coast. Combine that with some quaint and quirky characters and you will find yourself wanting to visit the fictional coastal town.

Author Jayne E. Self is a pastor’s wife who writes intriguing Christian mysteries. The reader is not overwhelmed with religion, though spirituality plays a part in her stories. Tinged with humour and clean in content, Self’s books are refreshing reads.

Is this book part of a series? Do you have to read previous books first before this one? I love books that take place in Canada, especially the maritimes. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Pat, for this awesome review. And for everyone’s who’s interested, this is my second Seaglass Mystery. Murder in hum Harbour was released in 2011. It’s not necessary to read one before two but you might prefer to do that as if you want to get a better understanding of who Gailynn is and what makes her tick. Both books are available on Amazon, can be ordered by your local bookstore, or through links on my website.
