The Guilty Plea is the second novel by Robert Rotenberg.
Robert Rotenberg is a criminal lawyer in Toronto. His first novel, Old City Hall, was a best seller and with his second novel The Guilty Plea he does not disappoint.

The story takes place in Toronto where, on the morning of his headline-grabbing divorce trial is set to begin, Terrance Wyler, the youngest son of the Wyler Food dynasty, is found stabbed to death in the kitchen of his million dollar home. Detective Art Greene arrives minutes before the press and finds Wyler’s four-year-old son asleep upstairs. When Wyler’s ex-wife shows up at her lawyer’s office with a bloody knife, it looks as if the case is over. But Greene soon discovers the Wyler family has secrets they’d like to keep hidden, and they’re not the only ones. If there’s one thing Greene knows, the truth is never simple.
As a criminal lawyer himself, Rotenberg uses his knowledge of the Canadian court system to write this mesmerizing page-turner. He carefully weaves into this murder mystery the differences between the U.S. and Canadian court systems. Having been born and raised in Canada watching American crime shows like Law & Order, I was ignorant to the Canadian court procedures, as well as how lawyers really work. Did you know they do not use gavels in Canadian courtrooms? I didn’t. This story was enlightening as well as suspenseful. I was also born and raised in Toronto, the setting of this murder mystery. I love reading stories set in my home town, especially when they take place in my own neighbourhood. But you don’t have to know Toronto to enjoy this thrilling story that will keep you enthralled from beginning to end.
The Guilty Plea was chosen as a book club read for Dufferin County’s “One Book, One County” this year. Before this book was announced the sponsors involved (The Orangeville Public Library, The Grand Valley Library, The Shelburne Library, and Orangeville independent book store BookLore) conducted a contest wherein those entering had to guess what the next book would be with 3 clues given. I guessed correctly and won a copy of the book as well as tickets to the finale where I got to meet Mr. Rotenberg. He is an intelligent and entertaining man with many stories to tell.
