Discovering the Secret

Remember that feeling when you came out of the cinema after watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind: then looking up into the sky; thinking to yourself: “It has to be true!” That is similar to the feeling you get when you read the book The Mistress of the Rock by Myron Edwards (55).

Although fiction, the story is based on many facets of the Aphrodite legend with one particular mystery revealed.

The book covers a period from 1991; and the first Gulf War; through to the present time and shows how a person can become affected by a place.  But, with a little imagination, and a lot of effort create a totally new image of the place.

Richard Cole is the one-time soldier who makes the discovery, and between him, his wife Julie and his air force colleague Peter, plan a scheme that will rejuvenate not just Petra Tou Romiou; but the island of Cyprus. The problem is that with all great ideas, sometimes there are consequences; and Richard learns of them in the most dramatic way:  For interwoven within the story, is the eternal conflict of husband, wife and mistress. Only this mistress is not mortal!

Set in Cyprus; the ‘Beautiful Island of Love’: The Mistress of the Rock portrays a slice of ex-patriot life as well as local flavours and atmospheres and takes you into a world full of mystery and myth that takes place in the present.

The book’s climax provides a twist to the story that comes as a surprise and provokes the question – “Do you believe?  

The next time you visit Aphrodite’s Rock, maybe you too will find the answer.
