Honor: Outdated or Underrated

About honor, based on two articles by James bowman and Lad Sessions.

What does honor represent to you?  Is it just a thing of the past that is irrelevant to the modern world?  Maybe it is still a staple in today’s society that reflects our integrity.  The articles written by Lad Sessions and James Bowman show two views of how honor is relevant in today’s society.  In their articles they demonstrate similarities and differences in what honor means today and what it has meant in the past.  Honor is an important part of a person’s character, whether it is as relevant today or not.

The two authors show similarities when writing about the topic of honor.  Both authors agree that to an extent honor is not as well represented today as it has been in the past.  They acknowledge college “honor codes” that preach to “never lie, and always tattle.”  They both identify “honor killings” as a ritual that is still practiced today.  This representation of honor is detrimental to preserving the integrity of the word honor.  Bowman and Sessions agree on a few of how honor is less pertinent.

These authors differ in their views of whether honor is still thriving or whether it is a figment of the past.  James bowman says it is “passé in the Western World today.  Sessions explains how personal honor is still alive and prominent.  He breaks down honor into sub-categories of “concepts of honor.”  Honor systems today work depending on size, ownership, consequences, tradition, and models.  James Bowman sees honor as a thing of the past that we only look upon in awe and admiration.  Honor is perceived in a different way by both of the authors.

I agree with Lad Sessions about the presence of honor in today’s world.  I believe in “personal honor” as a direct reflection of one’s character.   People look at how someone carries themselves when making a judgment about them.  How a person treats others and how a person represents himself is a major part of how others see him. As humans most of us want to be liked and do the right things.  By carrying ourselves with honor we can be respected by others.  I believe that “personal honor” is still very important and is viewed highly in the western world today.

Honor was definitely an important virtue in the past.  I believe that it is still very important today in the way that we conduct our business.  If you do not believe that honor is essential today, then look at the way that you act daily.  Are you trying to be loyal and trustworthy so that you will be respected by others?  You are just trying to bring honor to yourself and not shame.  The works of Sessions and Bowman reflect how honor is seen by different people today.
