How to Begin Following a Graphic Novel Comic Book Series

Wanted to start reading comics but decided not to because it looked too complex? With so many storylines and characters it can appear to be an impossible task, so here is some helpful tips to getting on your way to following that series you have always been interested in.

What Do You Want to Read?

Be it Marvel, Dc or Dark Horse there are hundreds of different publishers out there with thousands of different series’s so it all depends on what you really want to read. If you have a friend that is into graphic novels ask them a few questions  to see if there is anything they would recommend you. If you are not that lucky and a lone comic admirer just Google some of those titles that you have always fancied reading to see if any of them spark your interest.

Do Your Research

OK now you have picked your graphic novel series, all you have to do now is decide what graphic novels you are going to read. Many titles like the X-men graphic novels have several story lines, universes and time lines that the comic books follow, e.g Uncanny X-men, Astonishing X-men, Ultimate X-men, New X-men…etc. The best thing to do is start with a stand alone series. When I started reading DC comics I read the Joker graphic novel. It was a stand alone story so there was no need for me to read any other novel before or after it.

The perfect novel for a starting comic fan. Some series’s do not have many stand alone series’s though so if that is not an option it is best to begin at the start of a graphic novel storyline. Check out Amazon or your local graphic novel store to see what you can find, reading the backs of the novels gives you a short blurb about the story and usually tells you if it is the sequel or follow up story to another novel.

Keep Up the Work

It is easy to get confused when you have just started reading graphic novels, so the best thing to do is to look up characters or references on-line. Sites such as the Marvel homepage or Wikipedia are always helpful in answering any unanswered questions that may arise.

Most of all remember………Have fun!
