How to Start a Book Club

Starting a book club is a great way to motivate others to read. It’s also a great way to meet and connect with new friends.

  1. Ask your friends, neighbors and coworkers if they would be interested in being a book club member. You can advertise your book club on library bulletin boards or in your local free classifieds paper. Six to ten members is an ideal number for your group. You don’t want to have too many members and have the group feel impersonal.
  2. Set a regular time and meeting place for your club. Will you meet in a restaurant over dinner or in a cafe over coffee? Or, will you meet in a members home? The size of your group may have an impact on your decision.
  3. Choose a book.  Let each member of the group take turns at choosing a book. If you’re stumped on a book choice, ask a bookseller or a librarian. They can always tell you which books are flying off the shelves! You may want to have general book-choice guidelines. Will your group read only the classics? Or regional fiction? Or, will your book choices be “anything goes”?
  4. Read the book. Jot down any notes of interest as you read (always include page numbers for quick reference later).
  5. Meet and discuss the book. Discuss the book’s title, characters, message and memorable passages. It may help to have a list of questions prepared before the meeting.
