I Never Liked Reading

How I never liked reading, and how I still don’t really read that much.

I never liked reading much. Books meant school. School meant boredom, so I didn’t read unless I had to. At age five, the only books I would read were the books that the teachers assigned. We had to read a certain number of books to pass the class. After I was done reading all of the assigned books, I would just stop reading completely. Even though I didn’t like reading quietly inside my head, I enjoyed reading aloud in groups. The teacher would read, and then kid next to the teacher, and then the next kid after that.

At ten years old my reading habits didn’t change much. I still didn’t read much outside of school, I only did it when we had to read for thirty minutes at home. My favorite books were from Ronald Dahl. He wrote the best children’s books. All of my friends liked his books too. It was fun to read them because a lot of them had movies to go along with some of them. Even though I started liking some other books, I never took the time to read at home. My favorite books were picture books. I preferred the ones that had more pictures than words because I wouldn’t have to read as much. I read a few comic books and enjoyed them. They became my favorite books to read and then I got bored with them.

Now that I’m a little bit older, my reading habits still haven’t changed much. The things that have changed are: what I have to read, for what class, and how much. I still don’t really read books on my own time. However, when I do, I read all kinds. I read science fiction, poetry, non-fiction, novels, anthologies, comic books, and magazines. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of magazines because they’re all over my house. I read the time magazines and the national geographic ones. Sometimes I read articles online if I want to know about something, but most of the time I spend my free time doing other things.
