Comparing Victor Frankenstein, the Monster, and Lucifer.

Rules, Curfew and public approval are the tools in which society holds the leash of man with. When the leash of society however has been taken off what is left to tame the beast. The novels Lord of the Flies and Frankenstein both examine as the characters Jack and Victor Frankenstein fall from prime example of their society to savage beast. The creation of a single goal conquers the mind of the men absolutely destroying all the sense of civilization and order in their minds filling it with the most primal instincts.

As a prominent scientist in a University of Germany, Victor is held as one of the greatest minds in the world. The past of his family is that which shames even the most noble, coming from a rich family, he had many opportunities to expand his knowledge and compassionate heart which he took. His mother was potentially the most loving soul making all who touch it better people. Victor was a man who could do anything with his life and when he chose the path of science he fully dedicated himself to it.

Similarly Jack comes from an English boarding school where he has been given the role of head boy. This obviously shows he has the potential to be an organized leader and is being prepared for leadership in the world. Jack and his choir where matching clothes to signify unity and order.  He understood upon arriving on the island that there was a need for a leader to organize the boys and offered to take that responsibility. However losing in the election he offered for him and his choir to become the hunters, this pragmatic approach allowed Jack to remain a leader of the boys.

Although they both come from much different worlds, Jack and Victor Frankenstein both came from homes of order. When the leash of society releases them they both cling passionately to their past, however hard it is for them to do. On the island the choir and other boys love Jack as a friend and leader, and will stay by him when this is put to the trial. With no difference when Victor Frankenstein becomes his friends and family come to him the love him and return him to health.

Goals drive man to obtain to heights and leave the old ones forgotten in the past. When the boys first land on the island they are aware that without meat they won’t last for long. When it is discovered that the island is home to pigs Jack sets out passionately to kill one for the boys. This soon becomes and obsession and when their hope of rescue comes, it is this obsession that leaves them there in the island. However when Jack finally gets his pig he is consumed by the authority the others boy give to him and no longer satisfied as second but now must be the leader.

Likewise Victor Frankenstein becomes consumed by the creation of life. However only when he sees through the eyes of God does he realize that what he has created is a monster. This brings him upon his second obsession to destroy the beast. Both of the obsessions hurt those around him and when he is finally given the option to end it does he realize he can’t. Victor had destroyed his life with his obsession leaving himself with only guilt and self-pity.

These single goals destroyed their attempts to remain civil and corrupt their innocent minds. As the Lord of the Flies said, he is the beast in the back of their minds and he is also the reason everything went wrong. Victor destroyed his life over the pursuit of knowledge, where Jack destroyed his over power. Both of their ambition rode these men into the ground leaving none the better. All they leave in the wake is misery and hate, the absence of joy and love in both of their lives is more that apparent.

Ralph began as Jacks friend and companion on the island. They worked together and even though Ralph was the leader Jack could do almost whatever he wants. However Jacks ambition to rule the boys destroys their friendship and leaves a bloody fight. Jack in the end kills both of Ralph’s friends and sharpens a stake at both ends for Ralphs head. When the boys are finally rescued from the island, Jack has become so obsessed with hunting Ralph that the boys are burning down the island in order to capture him. All that was good and kind on the island was destroyed by the fires of Jack’s soul.

In Comparison the Monster was the fruit of Victor Frankenstein’s work in which he brought life to the dead. However upon its creation Victor abandons the Monster and leaves it for the dead. The Monster being only a child absorbs all the hate of this abandonment and hopes to salvage his wrecked life by the creation of another like him. However rather than creating the monster and allowing everyone to live happily ever after Victor destroys to destroy the monster’s hopes leaving them both miserable and alone. The darkness of Victor’s soul only ruins that which could have been two blessed lives.

Jack and Victor could not be satisfied with ruining not only ruing their own lives but the lives of those around them. This is what makes the crimes these men commit so unforgiveable. The monster and Ralph only wanted to live in happiness however this was not allowed due to Jack and Victors and ambition. They not only had to have everything but everyone else had to have nothing. This quality of theirs is so overpowering that many would find it hard to see through to any of their few redeemable qualities.

Jack and Victor both pursued what they perceived to be a better tomorrow. It was in this pursuit however that they lost their way and dragged humanity down with them. As people born to be beacons of hope for humanity they were accustomed  to having people naturally follow by their example, accepting what they do, however when things go wary these people may find it hard to get away. These peoples are the collateral damage of the war between civilization and savageness. When all is said and done all that Jack and Victor can reflect upon is all the damage they have caused.
