Lord of the Flies Character Analysis: Roger
Roger is a semi-main character in Lord of the Flies. I think he is evil because he was on Jacks side.

Roger’s background: It seems that Roger can be considered Jack’s Lieutenant, a cruel and sadistic person, he does not comprehend the basic rules of civilization. Like Jack, he feels a need to be superior and have power over others.
On the Island While on the island, I think Roger realises that there are no parents–though he is still held back by the rules of civilization: “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law” (Golding 54). However, the need to survive and the stress caused by this made the laws of his previous life no longer important. In the new life without rules he gave into his savage impulses. He rebelled by torturing the littleuns at castle rock and killed Piggy, finding a sense of joy from outwitting him.
