Mayo’s Last Dancer

A book review of Mayo’s last dancer.

I have read the book, Mayo’s last dancer from its first publication. It has since been published a second time in recent times and a film has now been produced. The story entails the struggle of a young boy who has dreams of becoming a dancer yet his family are poor and exist in an outback farm they struggle in life. There are seven boys and two girls who work together to make ends meet as best they can. He goes through school with other children and amazingly selectected to be included in squad of young dancers yet it comes second to study and communist rule as in policy and government.

The character is portrayed as one who has a thirst and hunger and undying ambition for dance and went through torturous techniques and long hours of training to be just right. He had the privilege of a secret viewing with other students of the great dancers of ballet in the world including  Russian dancers. He had met with a woman who would become a great supporter of his as well as legal counsel during a time as he defected from China in pursuit of dance and the world stage. When he attempted to return he would realise that the Government had a long memory and made it difficult  for him to re-enter but after a while was admitted. He is still known to be living in Australia where he settled into the city of Melbourne.

This sounds right up my street, a bit like Billy Elliot. I love that sort of book. A great review.
