Mrs. Darcy and The Blue Eyed Stranger

Mrs. Darcy and the Blue Eyed Stranger is a lovely book of short stories written by Lee Smith. Published by Algonquin, it’s a work of fiction that reveils to us that no matter what the hard realities of life, there are still rainbows after the storm and we might even find the pot of gold.

The book has her trademark of southern charm and devilish humor. It’s about a group of people she’s about to throw into a hurricane and where they will land nobody knows. It’s okay though, As it turns out it was the shaking up they sorely needed.

“Mrs. Darcy and the Blue Eyed Stranger” in the title story amazes her daughters when she throws over her staid way of life, stylish clothes, and abandons her children’s interests to go ga ga over a blue eyed stranger.

In “Stevie and Mama” a wife finds a secret stash of love letters in her beloved husband’s tool box exchanged in the months following the death of their young daughter.

 

Alice Scully bound to a wheel chair in, “The Happy Memory Club” has been told she has only a short time to live. She has seven grandchildren and considers that she was a good wife. Now she ignores her doctors advise and scribbles her memories to read to her nursing home writing class. Her memories are not all pleasant memories and scare the bejibbers out of her class mates.

Joline B. Newhouse writes a local news column titled, “Between the Lines” She writes the news the way she wants it, carefully editing out bad news, until one day her old rival dies bringing back memories Joline can no longer obliterate

Rita in “The House Tour” used to be Miss South Carolina but now has had a double mastectomy. Her husband couldn’t take it and left in the middle of the Chemo. But you never know where the next day will take you. Rita and the radiologist fell in love.

Lee Smith shows us through her stories that no matter what happens, with the best of intentions, or the worst, a new day will come and with each day a new opportunity.

    Nice book review, Ruby. About the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, I suppose it’s still there since most of the time the rainbow disappears before people could find the rainbow’s end,lol.

    Nice review. I love books of short stories. I hate to put a book down once I start it. Short stories are right up my alley.
