Of Mice and Men
A book of Californian farming life, wonderfully written by John Steinbeck.
Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck is a wonderful book that exposes a pair of farm laborers, George and Lennie. These two are almost complete opposites and still work together very well, George being the brain and Lennie being the muscle. Together them and some of the other farm workers helped to make this the Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. This book’s amazing climaxes, foreshadowing, and wonderful characters give it a major edge over some other novels.
In this book, foreshadowing plays a major role and helps make it so good. It makes the reader think and helps build up for that big spark at the climax. For example, when the other farm workers say that Candy’s old dog should just be shot in the back of the head. Candy protests saying, “What-hell! Had him since he was a pup!” All the others say that it’s for the better, that ending his life would end the dog’s suffering. This foreshadows Lennie’s death in the end when George shoots him in the head. Plus, when Candy said, “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog.” George learned from him and shot Lennie himself.
Characters also, like foreshadowing create the supports of the story. Every one of the characters has a very unique and interesting personality that makes them special. For example, George is smart, small, cunning, and a “father” to Lennie. These key characteristics play a big role in the outcome of the story. Another example is Lennie, a strong and not so smart guy that relies on George to guide him through life. The fact that Lennie is somewhat dumb also plays a big part in the story. These two made an unbreakable friendship and that brings up the question of why George shot Lennie. So many questions arise from these characters and that makes this story so much better.
This book has key characteristics that make it very wonderful. The shocking ending, the weird and yet wonderful characters, and the wonderful setting also contribute to the story. John Steinbeck made this a book to be treasured. I enjoyed reading every part of it and for those of you who love reading novels, you’ve found the right one.
