Planets and Mythology

Mythology Named the Planets.

The first and fastest planet;  Mercury, he was messenger of the gods.  In Greek Mythology he is known as Hermes.

The second and brightest planet;  Venus, she was Goddess of Beauty and Love.  In Greek Mythology she is Aphrodite.

The third planet Earth  is known as Gea.  She represented the Earth and was worshipped as the universal mother.

The fourth and red planet;  Mars, He was the God of War (for blood is red) and mostly because he acted and thought like a warrior.  He is Ares in Greek Mythology.   

The Fifth and the largest planet;  Jupiter, He was the King of  the Heavens, Earth, and all of the Olympian gods.  He is Zeus in Greek Mythology.

The sixth and slowest planet;  Saturn, He was the God of Time.  In Greek Mythology he is Cronus.

The seventh planet; Uranus, He was the God of the Sky.  He is known as Apollo in Greek  mythology.  Apollo was also a fine musician.

The eighth planet and blue planet; Neptune, He was the god of the sea.  In Greek Mythology he is known as  Poseidon.

If Pluto was still considered a planet; he would have been King of the Underworld.  In Greek Mythology he was known as Hades.  He was named after the coldest and furthest planet from the sun.

The sun and the moon are named after brother and sister:

Sun – Apollo /Helios in Greek and Roman Mythology is God of Light.   The sun is named after Apollo because it’s the brightest star in the sky. 
Moon – Diana/Artemis  Goddess of Hunting and Sister of Apollo.  The moon is the next brightest object

Some of the Planets were related;

Saturn was the son of Uranus….Saturn‘s sons; Neptune / Pluto /Jupiter

Mars was the son of Jupiter ……. Uranus and Earth were husband and wife
