President Obama to Speak at The First Black High School in Memphis
Who would ever forget the day that the President of the United States of America spoke at your commencement ceremony? Who would dare forget that this man is not only the President, but the first black President of the United States? President Barak Obama.
Each and every teenager looks forward to high school graduation day. Any event associated with the day is momentous, from the cap and gown pictures to prom night; memory books and yearbooks are spilling over with keepsakes and mementos. However, for Booker T. Washington High School graduates in Memphis, Tennessee, this day will be beyond memorable. Who would ever forget the day that the President of the United States of America spoke at your commencement ceremony? Who would dare forget that this man is not only the President, but the first black President of the United States? And who would want to forget that of thousands upon thousands of high schools in the nation that he could have chosen, Booker T. Washington High School was one among four others to be graced with his presence? Yes, that is right, President Barak Obama will deliver the commencement speech at the graduation of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 2011.
I would like to congratulate the Booker T. Washington High School graduation class of 2011 for being blessed with such an honor. Not only because President Obama will speak at your graduation ceremony, but, the reason that your school was selected. Booker T. Washington, opened in 1873, was the first school in Memphis for African American high school students, once suffered with a graduation rate of just 55%. Now, from 2007 until now, the rate has improved amazingly to over 80%. I would like to congratulate, not only the students who worked so hard, but, the entire Booker T. Washington faculty and administration, who implemented an inspired plan and rose to the challenges that plague our young people today.
Joining President Barak Obama on his visit to Memphis, will be U.S. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee. The Booker T. Washington High School 2011 commencement service will also be attended by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, also of Tennessee. This truly will be a wonderfully momentous occasion, not only for the students, but, for the whole city of Memphis, to have such prestigious men in our city. All eyes will turn to Memphis, Tennessee on Monday, May 16, 2011 as the graduates of Booker T. Washington take the aisles, draped is flowing robes and graduation caps crowning your glory. The nation will applaud you and celebrate with you as you embark on your journey to adulthood and all of the successes that await you. May we share with you on this day, your school motto: ‘We’re tops; we lead and others follow?’

Yes, everyone at the school needs to share in the credit for that 80% graduation rate. They deserve to have the President of the United States speak at their commencement, especially since he is the first African-American president and the school is a black school.
Thanks, Guy. I am really proud of these young people for their achievements.
