Readers are Leaders

There is a wide notion that knowledge is power but this claim is not correct. On the contrary, it is the acquisition of knowledge that bestows potential power on you.

Introduction

There is a wide notion that knowledge is power but this claim is not correct. On the contrary, it is the acquisition of knowledge that bestows potential power on you. How can I prove this?  The proof is simple. Acquiring information in a specific area, either by reading or by research, gives you a great store of knowledge. But until you apply it to make a decision that will be beneficial, to either yourself or fellow human beings, that knowledge remains largely unprofitable to everyone.

How can you acquire knowledge?

You acquire knowledge by reading books, magazines, newspapers, watching documentaries on Television and listening to people adjudged to be more experienced than you are. You also gain knowledge when you are mentored by experts or when you conduct research on the Internet, read books in a library and through formal education to mention but a few.  Acquiring knowledge and applying it for the betterment of many others confers leadership role on you.

The statement that readers are leaders is controversial but allow me to open your eyes to the facts that reading confers leadership role on you. Please follow my arguments carefully.

Books are sources of knowledge that enlightens and develops your mind.

The mission of most authors is to inform you about specific areas where that writer has better insights or expert knowledge through published books, electronic books or other materials. Reading any book therefore gives you new knowledge in the subject covered by the author.  I shall illustrate my claims by giving a vivid example everybody can easily relate to. I shall assume that you bought a book with a title “EFFECTIVE DRIVING TECHNIQUES THAT SAVES LIFE”.  This book’s table of content assures that it will teach all the techniques you must apply to become an effective driver, with a money back guarantee that any person who reads and applies what they have read will automatically become an effective driver.

Consequently, anyone interested in updating his or her knowledge in the subject treated in that book will simply buy the book, read, digest and apply what they have learned.  As you read and assimilate this book, you extract some new information on the subject treated. This extracted information improves your knowledge bank such that when next you drive a car, you become conscious of the need to drive effectively. The application of the knowledge you acquired by the reading of that book is by a reflex action as if programmed.

Secondly, the insights you gained by reading the book, will enable you to counsel others on the issue of using “effective driving technique” when driving.  Also, any where the issue of driving effectively is discuss, the level of information you have to share on the subject will amaze most listeners.  As you counsel, lecture or teach others in this particular area, you become a leader in that subject and it also impacts on your driving skills permanently.

Reading confers authority on you

Reading has the capacity to empower you. It is a known fact that you can become an expert in any subject you desire by researching it, reading it up and applying the knowledge gained to move ahead of your peers.  As you become more knowledgeable, other people too lazy to subject themselves to the rigours of reading, will recognize your competence and seek your opinion on issues concerning areas of your expertise thereby conferring leadership role on you.

Why must you read books?

From what we have discussed so far, to declare that books are priceless opportunities for developing an average person into a leader will not be far from the truth. To further buttress my submissions above, I declare that the easiest way to lead others in this 21st century is to read books for the following reasons:

  1. Books expose you to other cultures enabling you to relate with people from diverse cultures.
  2. Books remove ignorance from you and make you highly knowledgeable.
  3. Books give you access to millions of authors minds thus making you wiser.
  4. Books make you better prepared to take opportunities boldly in business.
  5. Knowledge acquired by reading makes you a role model in your locality.
  6. Application of the insights you have, makes you a refined person, capable of handling diverse challenges with ease.
  7. Books help you achieve your purpose in life due to exposure to good information.

My submissions

Reading books, expands your mind such that your life will hardly remain the same thereafter. If you dare to apply the nuggets of knowledge, acquired through dedicated reading of any area you are passionate about, your horizon becomes enlarged and your world expands tremendously.  Consequently, I urge you to grab a book on any topic you are passionate about, read with an open and inquisitive mind eager to either prove my submissions totally right or wrong.

Conclusion

If you desire to become a person of influence in this information age, you must become an avid reader.
