Review of The Bingo Palace by Louise Erdrich, Part 3, Job Situation

This article is focussing on aspects of Native American experience as portrayed in Louise Erdrich’s ethnic novel „The Bingo Palace“. Part III, Job Situation in a Reservation.

The job situation in a reservation for Native Americans is very bad. Most Indians want to leave their reservation and work outside the reservation. Lipsha for example worked on a sugar plantation when he lived outside, then he returns and does not find a job until Lyman offers him the opportunity to work in his game hall.

Shawnee leaves the reservation to study design and Albertine goes to a medical school.

To study is one of the very few possibilities to get a good job, maybe even outside the reservation, if you do not have some sort of supernatural power to heal people and so becoming a medicine man or to get into religion as Xavier Toose.

Lyman Lamartine for sure has had much luck to get into gambling business, for it is the best possibility to earn money at the moment.
