Main Characters: Ana Taggert, Randi Abrahams
Synopsis: This book is about a young college graduate who wants to be a teacher. After moving to a rich section of Manhattan, she discovers the dark inside world of Manhattans private schools. But most of all she discovers the secret world of tutoring and the constant large flow of money tutoring can bring in; you only need to know the secrets.
Some significant quotes are:
- “Tutoring is simple; you just need to know the right secrets” – Randi Abrahams
This quote is important because although Ana has started tutoring, she does not have many clients and she is having a rough start and getting out of danger by thinking on her feet is common. After meeting Randi, Ana learns the secrets to success and receives more clients, has an easier time, and she is able to charge higher prices per hour.
- “I was in dangerous territory, I could have been fired. I had expected that Katie had done her work.” – Ana Taggert
This is a super important quote because this is where Ana learns that not only do tutors help with work, they do the work. Ana tries to get around this with her teaching methods and is successful sometimes. Most of the time though, she actually had to do the work or type the work with dictated theses or sentences.
- “I was just another one, another tutor; if I quit they would just hire a new one. Tutors are disposable” – Ana Taggert
This is an important quote because although Ana’s schedule is packed with clients, she knows that she can’t quit because the students would let her go without so much as a slight hint of caring. They were just used to tutors because their parents had provided them for their whole life and if Ana left, it would not make a difference to them. But the parents are a different story, they would make sure they ruined her whole career if she left, but they would just hire a new disposable tutor.
