Warning this article contains spoilers for the book Sent written by Haddix.
The book starts out with Jonah, Katherine, Chip, and Alex appearing in 1483. They were sent back into time to fix a ripple (any significant change caused by time travelers, which alters the past and present) what happened when men in the future went into the past and took children to be adopted. They went too far and started taking children that history would notice when they disappeared. Time experts decided to get all the kids together at a adoption conference so they could send them back to there appropriate time. The kids didn’t want to be sent back because they liked the 21-century and their families. One of the men, nickname J.B. hurried and went to send Chip and Alex back. Right before they went Jonah and Katherine grabbed them taking them to the past too. They found themselves in a dark closet, Katherine was suffering of time sickness while the others sat waiting. When Katherine felt better they helped her up and she looked out into the room and thought she saw ghosts. These ended up being tracers which are what really was happening if no one had interfered with their time. The tracers ended up being Alex and Chip. When they touched them they could go back to there life’s in 1483. They would start to look like them too. J.B could talk to them through a device called an elucidator, Jonah was able to grab it before they left, it’s a high tech blackberry type appliance. In this time it resembled a rock so people didn’t notice it. They found out that they could be invisible using the elucidator. They wondered around finding clues to what they might need to do to fix time and get out of there. Jonah and Katherine ended up going with J.B. in a place with no time. They could watch Chip and Alex on a TV on the wall. J.B. explained what was happening with Chip and Alex. He said that it would take 2 years to fix time. Luckily they could speed up time where they are. They planned on taking Chip and Alex back one day in a battle where they were going to die. Jonah and Katherine succeeded and got them back. They were able to go back home. When all four of them were playing basketball J.B. came walking down the street. Katherine’s first thought was he was here to take Jonah back to his time. But instead he wanted Jonah and Katherine (and a dog) to go back in time with one of the other adopted kids. Chip and Alex wanted to go with them but J.B. said that there was a lower chance of success. To them they would only be gone for an instant and they wouldn’t even notice. J.B. can’t figure out why these kids can have a better chance then any of there scientists. With that the book ends, and for the third to clean up and close.
