Sheep to Silk: A Reflection on the Alchemist
A brief paragraph on Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist.
In Paul Coelho’s The Alchemist, there is an obvious journey pattern, and it can be seen in all stages of the story. The elements I chose for this project were: Main Character, Minor Characters, Conflict, Characters and Conflict, Relationships, Setting, Theme, and Knowledge gained. All of my symbols represented something. The shepherd’s cane represented Santiago, the pot Fatima, and the tea cup as the tea salesman. The sheep and coins represented Santiago’s conflict, the bridge and bed as his conflict between comfort and risk, and the pyramids as the main setting of the novel. The compass signified the theme to show that the whole book was based around finding your way in the world, and the path to the treasure to represent how you must overcome obstacles and keep working toward your dreams to achieve them. I arranged the symbols on the paper with the cane in the middle, to show how Santiago is the main focus of the whole novel, and had things around the cane. The compass tangled off so as to always be reminding him to follow his dream, no matter how off-track he became on his quest. Santiago loved Fatima, and this is showed by the simple “equation” of some sorts. I showed the Pyramids off the side as if to show that they were off in the distance, as they were for most of the novel. Using simple VS. signs and a scale to represent the conflict and comparison of two things, in both being comfort and familiarity on one side, and risk and wealth on the other. Using these symbols, I believe I have created a simple and effective diagram to demonstrate my ideas.
