Short Story Review: Coyote Crossing by Marilyn Peake

A harsh, dark tale about children fighting for freedom.

Maria is a feisty, determined girl, travelling illegally into America from Mexico for a better life. Along the way, she faces pain, horrendous abuse and a spirit crushing, gut wrenching trip to a better life.

This short story is harsh, but exquisitely told. I really liked the character Maria, was shocked, saddened and upset for her and her siblings’ plight. This riveting story keeps you guessing till the end, heart in mouth, and when she finds salvation in the promised land, the twist in the tale sends the blood rushing to your head and your pumping heart slide into your boots.

This tale might be uncomfortable reading for some, but as things like this happen to these poor people every day, it’s a great, relevant to society weaving of a life.

You will not expect the twist in the end either, which I think, is the blood red icing on the cake…..
