Should Literature be Studied?

Should we be studying literature?

I take English Literature as a subject and of course, this requires having to read certain novels and oftern deep anaylsis of said novels. After hardcore studying these books however, I think that reading too much into a novel can oftern ruin the whole thing for you. Books are supposed to be enjoyed after all, yet we’re tearing them apart, which is NOT what they’re meant for! While I am sure there are exceptions, I doubt authors sit down to write novels thinking, “Ah! What shall I hide in my book for students to tear their hair out over? What hidden messages shall I thread throughout?” Or maybe they do. Perhaps I’m wrong. But I think you get to a point where you lose the enjoyment of a book as you’re trying too hard to decipher it, searching for hidden meanings. You’re no longer reading to relax or be entertained, which I personally believe to be the point of a book.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this, as I know it’s for educational purposes that books are studied, but I do think it’s a shame.

Thoughts are welcome!

Good post. My GF is at Uni, and says the same, it is so much harder to enjoy the literature she’s studying. :-)
