Soldier’s Home

How is the title of the story ironic?

The title of the story “Soldier’s Home” is ironic because the first impression of having read the title is that this story will be about an institution for veteran soldiers who don’t have a home. Another point of view could be that it’s about a soldier that has come home but it’s not any of them. When that story starts it tells about Krebs, a young soldier returning to his parents home while figuring out what to do with the rest of his life, and through the story that author Hemingway explain that Krebs has no home.

The story tells that the war changed Krebs dramatically and all his feelings and beliefs had been demolished. The war had made Krebs feeling to love to disappeared; he doesn’t longer love. Even though his family, town, etc.. are still the same he seems not to fit in this life. This is because he did not only lived on his own, but has dealt with life and death situations that traumatized him which makes it harder for him to fit to his childhood life. Krebs does not feel comfortable in his home or town so he actually has no home at all. Although the title of the story is “Soldier’s Home” Krebs doesn’t feel at home.
