The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime Paper
This is a review of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime”.
I chose to do a poster reflecting the book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” written by Mark Haddon. The poster was required to have portions taken from all parts of the book, and is supposed to make a statement about what I think the book meant. The following is what I put on my poster, and why.
I chose to do a border around the edge of my poster, because it was neater, and seemed to reflect what the book was saying. I used the smiley-faces that he showed in the beginning as part of it, and also some of the prime numbers, because the chapters are all prime, and he just loves numbers in general. I chose a quote from the end of book; the very last paragraph, which basically summed up what happened from his point of view. I also chose a gate for my center part, because the gate symbolizes a couple of different things. For one thing, it symbolizes the beginning of the book, when Christopher finds the dead dog, and also how Christopher’s mother goes “across the fence” to se Mr. Shears. The cars are kind of obvious, because every morning on the bus, he sees a certain amount of cars, and whenever he sees a certain number of red cars, or a certain amount of yellow cars, it controls what his mood is going to be for the rest of the day. The letters in the top right corner are there because of the letters that Christopher’s mom wrote to him. His dad hid the letters, because he had told Christopher that his mom was dead. I drew a “photograph” of Christopher, his dad, his mom, and part of Mr. Shears. I made the picture look like it was ripped down the middle, with Christopher and his dad on one side, and his mom and Mr. Shears on the other. The dog in the stars I made was based on the dog on the front cover, and the part where he pointed out all the things about Orion, and how you can make anything out of the different star formations (like a dinosaur out of the constellation Orion). So I made Wellington out of stars too. Also I added in the title at the top, and some details about the cars, and how that affects his day, and how he reacts towards other people.
That’s pretty much all I did for my poster. I tried to make it a good representation of the book, and the journey that Christopher went through, by using just colors, and pictures from the book. I like the different representations of cars, and all of the quotes. I think that the message that is trying to be sent is that you can’t fight fate. Christopher went on a journey to find out who killed his neighbor’s dead dog, and not only did he find the culprit, but he found his mother, his home, and lots of other things too. I think he and everyone around him has a better understanding of what he is capable of accomplishing. Like Christopher said: “And then I will get a first-class honors degree and become a scientist. And I know I can do this because I went to London on my own, and because I solved the mystery of “Who killed Wellington?” and I found my mother, and I was brave and I wrote a book, and that means I can do anything.”
