The Divide by Elizabeth Kay Book
A review of the book The Divide by Elizabeth Kay.
What if there was another world, just out of reach? What if unicorns, elves, pixies, and dragons all existed? What if that mysterious world was only a heartbeat away? What would you do for a chance to visit?
Felix is on a trip to Costa Rica with his parents when he decides to hike to the Divide, the watershed of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. When they have almost reached the spot, his parents do not want him to go on- Felix has a heart disease that causes him to pass out, and he will eventually die from it. However, Felix is determined and when his parents are distracted, he goes to the Divide. With one foot on each side of the Divide, he realizes he should have listened to his parents. He has an attack and passes out.
When he revives, Felix is surprised not to have been moved like he usually is when he wakes up. And then he realizes that he is definitely not in Costa Rica anymore. He sees what he would call a griffin fly towards him and they chat for a minute, wondering if they are both dreaming. On the other side of the Divide, humans, elephants, and others are mythical creatures. As Felix realizes that he is not dreaming, and the strange land he is in has real magic, he looks for a cure to his illness with his new friend, the elf (or tangle-child, according to her) Betony. But when many of the creatures they meet along the way to a big city, Tiratattle, become sick and even die from potions made by a certain devious japegrin, or pixie, named Snakeweed, they know that they must put a stop to it. Even in a world of magic, life has many limits.
The Divide is an intricate book, in which the author has created a completely new world that feels rather plausible. I extremely enjoyed the characters, and their interactions, and I loved how the point of view switches between characters. The Divide is a great book that I would recommend for ages 10 and up, and for people who like mythical creatures and fantasy books.
