The Effects of World War II on Literature

Notes from the Norton Anthology.

Distribution of power is the purpose of war, during World War II, the allied countries Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States fought a victorious battle against Germany and Japan.  Britain started in the war in September 1939 and fought the odds that depleted its resources and severely disrupted its traditional class structure. The Soviet Union suffered the most casualties since it got invaded by Germany in June  1941. U.S.S.R. was a new world power at the time and it still remained at an economic disadvantage and dissolved in 1991 after the cold war against its ideological adversaries in the west. America entered the war after Japans attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The War reorganized America’s economy and altered its people’s lifestyles. During World War II America’s industry expanded rapidly, mostly for military purposes. It also started the women’s workforce. After the War women were reluctant to go back to domestic home making.            African Americans after they enlisted in the war or were drafted were unwilling to return back to the segregation and prejudice that was in America at the time.

The first two and the only two atomic bombs were exploded in Japan in 1945, and its affects were great. When North Korea invaded South Korea, the United States was not allowed to use nuclear weapons because of the United Nations. During the Cold war it was fought over greatest military strength.  The war was between the forms of government of Western Capitalism versus Soviet State Socialism. Geopolitically sponsored the formation of socialist governments in its known satellite nations of Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. In Africa where new nations gained independence from colonial rule, West and East competed for influence. Overall the perceived a threat in the U.S.S.R.’s 1948 attainment of nuclear weaponry and its maintenance of massive troop strength beyond its borders. When Communist revolutionaries took control of mainland China in 1948 the Cold war moved beyond Europe to encompass the entire globe.

After World War II half of the United States had a college education which was unmatched by any other nation in the world. America was advancing greatly in jobs requiring a college degree and with mobilization. Great accomplishments and inventions were created allowing for the faster transport of Americans, this caused the average American to move once every 5 yrs.

The era of 1953 to 1961 it was called the Eisenhower era.  He was the reason for the defeat of Germany in World War II, and everyone thought of him as the father who ended the world war and the one who allowed for great developments in America. The Soviet Union was racing America over education thus the Soviet Union developed Sputnik and launched it into space. It also was a time in which many African American civil rights movements happened and when the government wanted women to return to domestic roles which was now possible with labor saving machinery.

Then President Kennedy was eleceted and during this time The Soviet Union was still installing much of its weapons in other countries. When The Soviet Union installed ballistic missles in Cuba the U.S protested and greatly and stated if they did not withdraw they would blockade Cuba. There was no such thing as a stable economy during this time, instead everything would grow faster.

The 1960s started off with the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. There were more African American civil rights and for the first time since after World War II, women started to embrace and show their legal, ethnical, and cultural interests through something called feminism. In 1961 President Kennedy sent a small number of troops to help South Korea resist the invasion of North Korea. Then Lyndon Johnson and Nixon increased their presence in Korea, but then there were many political disputes. Eventually violence was brought in the situation, and Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and so was Richard Kennedy.

Then in the next election the Democrats lost to the Republicans, and Richard Nixon took Presidency. With this he had the burden of dealing with the Vietnam war in which the U.S eventually retreated and lost.

By the end of the 1970’s some characteristics of previous decade’s countercultural revolt had been accepted in the mainstream, including informalities of dress, relaxation of sexual codes of behavious, and an increased respect for individual rights. During the Presidency of Reagan, incomes increased and taxes fell, also many work forces were downsized into more profitable sizes, also the military quickly increased.

Literature with the great advancements in global powers and economies have changed. Cultural Homogeneity and great patriotism in their writings have been created to help stop the spread of the Communism developing in the rest of the World. They started to express the ideas of a whole race or group rather then one particular person.

Also, in Journals such as The New Yorker, Collier, or the Saturday Evening Post were all posting multiple ads for cars and many electric appliances.  The television started to replace the magazine, and it showed all the similarities between all of the  Americans.

Hemmingway became the greatest author of this time and many other authors felt they hade to act like him to be taken seriously. Hence it created the desire to write the “great American novel”. Regionalism could remain an interest but only if it provided deeper meaning, William Faulkner encouraged the belief among younger writers that dealing with the American South meant grappling with monumental issues of guilt and inexorable power of history.

Writers began responding to critical movements with literary strategies the first challenge was the “death of a novel “controversy. As boundaries of time and space were eclipsed by television, air travel, and an accompanying global awareness, the once essential unities of representation no longer provided ground on which to build a work of literary art.

Another development in literary theory was developed known as “Deconstruction” brought from France. It showed how truth was usually an underlying rhetoric and not really a fact.  The death of the Novel debates and Deconstruction converged to destabilize literary genres that were o nce thought to be a most reliable window on the world.

Then the invention of the nonfiction novel and its attendant school of New Journalism which held that characterization, imagery, symbol, and the like were no longer the exclusive province of fiction but appropriate tolls for an improved journalism. One of Deconstructions claims was that there is no absolute objectivity every author journalist or not writes from a point of view whose perspective carries with it any number of colorings and baises.
