The Importance of Reading

Reading is the key skill that you need to develop literacy and success at school and later life. It contributes to mental and emotional understanding and success and there is no substitute for it! To become a better read…you just have to read.

·  Reading develops your creativity. Unlike movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow you to create in your mind how a particular character looks like or imagine how a scene plays out. Reading a book therefore, allows you to exercise and cultivate your creative thinking skills.

  • Developing good reading skills improves your ability to comprehend concepts and ideas.
  • Reading develops critical thinking, thus, ensuring that you will be able to think and make good decisions.
  • Your fluency and, consequently, communication skills are improved by reading.
  • Reading introduces you to new things and has the ability to broaden your interests.
  • Reading regularly increases your vocabulary.
  • Reading can help you to develop positive values.
  • Reading increases your ability to concentrate.
  • Developing your reading and comprehension skills, prepares you for the “real world.” Being able to read well means that you will have less trouble understanding manuals, guides or contracts – vital documents and papers in life and work.
  • Spelling improves when words are seen in print.
  • Reading also improves your writing skills, as you are able to “subconsciously acquire good writing style.”

Read 30 minutes a day…every day…Reading can be fun, comforting, stimulating, soulful, confronting…

Somewhere…there’s a great book…for everyone…
