The Kiss by Kate Chopin

Short story review.

The best short story that I have ever read is ‘The Kiss’ by Kate Chopin. In this short story, Chopin portrays how bad and dishonest a character could be. Kate Chopin’s idea of this story is that people should not be judged merely by their appearance. As I read through this story, this story is about finding one’s self.

The main character of this story named Nathalie. The problem is the fact that she is in love with two men; Harvey and Brantain at the same time. However, she choose Brantain instead of Harvey because he is very rich, and she thinks that if she marry him, her life will be better than before. After Nathalie and Brantain’s wedding ceremony, Harvey comes and says that Brantain has sent him there to kiss her. She hopefully trying to give him the kiss, but suddenly Harvey tells that he has stopped kissing women, and leaves the ceremony. After that, Nathalie realizes that she can’t have everything in her life.

I would use this in my Literature class so that my students will learn that we cannot be greedy and materialistic in our life. There are lost of thing we can learn from this story. For instance, Nathalie has to choose between love and money. If she has all the wealth, she will not get love from her dreamed man. If she chooses Harvey, she will have only love and live in poverty. The lesson can be learned is that, we have to make a wise choice and be grateful for it, and otherwise, we will end up feeling self-pitied until the end of our life. A choice we make in life will make all the differences. My students will also be able to compare the similarity of this story with Robert Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’ and learn more deeply about making choices in life.
