The Law of Attraction
The new age notion, how it works, does it work? books about the theory and how convincing they were – a run down of the effectiveness of the two most popular teachers of the law and a synopsis of a third book that I felt offered an easier ingestion of the theory via the idea of positive thinking.
The Law of Attraction
There is a wave of mass interest in the whole subject of the law of attraction due to most recently Rhonda Byrne’s ‘The Secret’ and Esther and Jerry Hicks who have been enlightening audiences in seminars for over 20 years on how to apply the law of attraction. They have a wide range of books on the market that is specifically meant to target certain areas of our lives: Everyday issues, Money, Relationships etc.
Which lets face it, are our constant and biggest gripes!
Some say that the law of attraction has its roots in Quantum Physics based on the idea that everything is energy, this also includes our thoughts. The consensus is that our thoughts as energy, attract unto itself things, situations and people that are of like vibrations whether we are aware of it or not. So we are automatically attracting every moment of our lives.
All the books mentioned and unmentioned, offer various methods of helping the reader to govern their thoughts and to inspire them to be positive.
The main components of the law/ the basic principles are:
- Knowing exactly what you want
- Asking for it
- Feeling at one with what you have asked for by pretending/behaving as if you already have it.
- The final step is allowing, which is simply being open by expecting and letting go of one’s attachment to what was requested.
There are many online websites featuring masters and life coaches etc. who all want to explore the law of attraction on an in-depth basis to help change your life, well at a cost of course.
However there are also many personal experiments being carried out by people across the world who are actively seeking to change their lives for the better. They learn the basic principles, do whatever it takes to remain positive everyday and set various challenges extending from a week to 100 days to prove that their desires can come to fruition/become manifestations by applying the law.
There are also many vloggers on YouTube who sing the praises of the law of attraction, and give testimonies of the transformation that their lives have undergone. Many claimed that the law worked in their lives in very profound ways; whilst a few others thought it to be somehow fanciful notions and a little too far off their spectrum of reality.
Rhonda Byrnes ‘The Secret’ explains this fundamental law of the universe in very easy terms by using many philosophers, life coaches, Meta-physicists and quotes from various individuals throughout history to support this seemingly age-old concept. Somehow though, when one were away from the enthusiasm of the script and faced with the real demand of life whether it be paying the gas company, the overdue credit cards or buying food it lost its shine just a tad. It’s made even worse in this climate of economic turmoil, as many people have been made redundant or are jobless, and are faced with real worries everyday, which doesn’t exactly take you to a happy positive place. Jerry and Esther Hicks books even though actively discussing the law, are written by Esther who apparently channels a group of spirits called Abraham. Their books are laced in spiritualism and the concept of spirits. If that is your thing then great if not, you may not like the connotations. However you can still manage to garner from the pages that the fundamental idea of being positive is an essential tool to having what you desire.
There are many schools of thought who concur that positive thinking can actively increase one’s mental and emotional state, which can then drastically improve one’s physical health. Basically, smiling more often zonks up the ol’ immune system and creates more soldiers for any ongoing or oncoming battles. So the obvious thing is that if your emotional state is balanced, you can be more creative and more open to opportunities, and if necessary even create some prospects for yourself.
So it doesn’t really hurt to be positive right?
I later found a book by Lynn Grabhorn entitled ‘Excuse me your life is waiting’ which breaks down positive thinking in everyday terminology with examples of personal life experiences as well as clients and friends etc. It talks about her low and high points and why she attributes positive thinking to her successes.
This was an easier read to digest as there were no esoteric theories, no apparent religious or spiritual implications; it was purely about how thoughts and the mere monitoring of them via our emotions can effect a positive change in our lives.
Lynn Grabhorn basically agrees that focusing/channelling one’s thoughts into imaginary scenarios or imaginary things that one desires, but does not yet have, is indeed a hard task. So therefore one has to become creative with how they go about maintaining that emotional high for a few minutes/hours of the day until they become more adept at projecting themselves to that place automatically.
It seems a pretty straightforward concept but it is a hard one to maintain enthusiasm for it if you doubt it will work. Coincidentally if you doubt it, it will not work or it slows down the process because doubts come from a negative place. So I end this article by setting us all a challenge to try it just for fun and see how we get on. Besides it doesn’t hurt to crack a smile from time to time right? It will certainly put the kids or your partner in a good mood and if your single, then wa-heyy you may just hit the jackpot!!!
