The book starts off with narration by the antagonist. The antagonist’s name is Niccolo Machiavelli. He starts out at an auction in Paris, in present time, trying to get two Japanese masks which he has been after for 200 years. He is an immortal, he pledged to serve one of the Dark Elders, an immortal evil being who came before the earth, whose intern gave him eternal life. When he is bidding he gets a phone call alerting him of enemies in town. He soon leaves and narration is flashed to the protagonist. The main characters are a group of four totally different people, Nicholas Flannel, another immortal, Josh and Sophie, the two twin’s prophesied to bring the end to or save the world, and Scatty, the warrior who trained all the most well known warriors of all time. They had gone through a portal taking them from a shop in Okapi, California to an ancient church basement in Paris, France.

I find this book to be like a lot of other fantasy books I have read. The characters seem to travel long distances. One character always gets jealous of the other and ends up taking it out on other characters, just like Josh in this book, and other characters in the four books of Lighting Thief. I can definitely see similarities but, overall it is the differences that keep me reading them.
