The One Minute Manager

Review for Ken Blanchard’s “The One Minute Manager”.

The One Minute Manager is about managing a company more efficiently in less time. The three main concepts of One Minute Management are setting One Minute Goals and giving One Minute Praisings and One Minute Reprimands. Setting One Minute Goals consists of writing out on a single sheet of paper a goal that contains no more than 250 words. Read and re-read each of your goals, taking no longer than a minute each time. Every once in a while, take out your sheet of goals and look at them. Remind yourself what good behavior looks like, and then see if your behavior matches the goals you have set. Everyone should know what is expected of them from the very beginning. The One Minute Praising consists of telling people up-front what you expect of them and that you will let them know how they are progressing. Give praise immediately, it is not good to wait, because it can be easily forgotten. When giving praise, be sure to be specific on what the person did right. Express how much this person has helped the company and you. Also tell how good you feel about their performance. Remember to give a moment of silence for them to take in the feelings you have just shared with them. Encourage them to keep up the good work. And lastly, give them a handshake or a pat that signifies that you appreciate all they do for the company. Finally, the One Minute Reprimand consists of telling the person beforehand that you need to speak to them about their progress. Do not wait to reprimand people, and tell them specifically what they did wrong. Then, share your feelings about their mistake. Wait for a few seconds to continue, creating a short awkward silence allowing them to reflect on your words. One Minute Managing allows a person to manage efficiently, and have more time to enjoy other things.
