The Sixth Sense
Perfect Intrigue.
Well, Do you want to be an accomplished writer? Many of you have that desire. This review is a little late because I am not a fan of mysteries but you have to read In the Shadow of the Master: Classic Tales by Edgar Allen Poe edited by Michael Connelly.
This book came out in January of 2009 in honor of Poe’s 200th birthday. It is the read of June. Use your sixth sense and read this book. Do not let it slide by. The book has many of Poe’s short stories and and well known poems. After each selection of Poe’s there is an essay tat is very strong on how the authors were influenced by Poe and used in some of their own works. It is writing at its best. Poe’s 19th wording and his gift for manipulation of the mind and the soul are all represented in the book. You get to see his works as well as glimpses of other mystery writers. Many of whom are accomplished mystery writers and Edgar Award recipients.
It is superb writing. Rarely are short stories, essays and poetry bound together. They all play a beautiful tribute to a great American mind. However, It is not for the faint of heart. The original stories of Poe are grotesque at times and you will have to read it early in the day to prevent nightmares and to relax.
You have to read this book to discover other writers and why they write. read it just for Ranting and Raven. This is a two page poem written by the acclaimed author Joseph Wambaugh. It is a very powerful poem about the dangers of technology especially computers. Hollywood Crows is his last est mystery. You may want to check it out along with several other writers.
This is writing at its best crossing a variety of forms. If you are not a fan of mystery you may be in June with the sixth sense.
