The Time Machine: Character Analysis
An analysis of the time traveler in this novel by H.G Wells.
The Time Traveller is described, by his peers, as sneaky and a prankster and also curious as he shares his story of time travel.
The Time Traveller’s physical appearance is a person from the 1800s. When the Time Traveller enters his house, he appears very dirty, rugged; he has on tattered clothes, and has a haggard look on his face.
The narrator describes the time traveler’s personality as someone who is too clever to be believed, or in other words a person who plays elaborate pranks. At first the guest do not take his ideas seriously because they think that it is all a big prank, but they are still interested in his ideas because many of the guests come back for a second visit with the Time Traveller.
When the Time Traveller starts to describe his trip to the future we see how curious and careless he can be. When he first starts to travel forward through time he goes very slowly, but soon his curiosity takes over and he speeds to the year 802,701. He starts to explore the land he is in and forgets all about the time machine. He stays out until night time, and when he finally gets back the machine has gone missing. Out of frustration he starts being rough with one of the fragile natives. This shows carelessness because he is trying to blame someone for his mistakes.
When the Time Traveller meets the natives of the future for the first time he treats them with peace and respect, and in return is given flowers and a feast. When the Time Traveller is talking with his guest he has a know-it-all attitude and feels that he is the smartest of them all.
