Tomball Library Mystery Book Club

Mystery Book Club discusses Anne Perry’s: A Christmas Secret.

If you are someone who loves reading, more specifically, reading fictional mystery novels then you should know about the mystery book discussion group that is held every fourth Thursday at the Tomball Library, 30555 Tomball Pkwy. Georgia Owens, founder of the book club, has worked for the city for three- and- a- half years and at the Tomball Library for one year.

Owens began the book club in October of 2007 to gain more book clubs in the area. The group does not discuss true crime books only the fictitious thriller mysteries. Attendance fluctuates between six and eight women who participate when their schedules allow them to do so. The group’s goal is to get more authors to come talk about their works with the public and their fans.

Members of the book club include: Betty Schwoeppe, Karen Williamson, Rose Callaway and Dorothy Borders. All the members seem to agree that there should be more men and young people who participate in the book discussion group.

The Mystery Book Club covered the less than 200 page novel that they all had just finished reading over the course of a few days; Anne Perry’s A Christmas Secret, baring a curious bold red door on the cover.

“The members vote, as a committee, on books that are read,” Owens said. “We also take heritage months into consideration, such as African and Asian history months; we will incorporate these themes with books we choose.”

The next group meeting will be held Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. On February 5th, mystery author Kathryn Casey will speak to all patrons about her writing and experiences as an author. She lives in the area so all are excited to have her come to the library for this program. She has written 6 True Crime books. Her first book in a new mystery series, Singularity, is about a Female Texas Ranger. Second in this series, Blood Lines, will be out in July. All is welcome to hear this author speak about her exciting new series as well as her other work.

Then on May 6, 2009 the Mystery Book Club will have two other authors speak about their mystery writings; authors Jane Cleland and Rosemary Harris will speak about their writing and their experiences as authors. They will also be selling and signing copies of their books as well as meeting all of their local fans.

Jane Cleland has written a mystery series with the latest, Killer Keepsakes, to be published in April. Rosemary Harris will have the second in her mystery series, The Big Dirt Nap, out in February. Please join all of us in welcoming Jane and Rosemary to our library. They will be appearing later in the day at a local bookstore as well.
