American literary heroes have roots that can be traced back to Natty Bummpo, a character created in the mid-1700s by an author named John Fenimore Emerson.

Even contemporary American literary heroes share with the tradition’s patriarch certain traits, such as humility, a desire for social justice, and an insistence on reforming civilization through the existing political system.
