City of Rogues: Book I of the Kobalos Trilogy

Meet Kron Darkbow. He dresses in black, carries a big sword and sometimes a bow. But he’s just as deadly with his fists. And throwing darts and knives and grenados. Yes, grenados. Little clay balls that go boom. Kron has arrived in the city of Bond seeking revenge for the deaths of two loved ones. The man in black quickly finds himself entwined in the workings of an underworld crime boss, Belgad the Liar. During his struggles, Kron crosses paths with a local healer, Randall Tendbones. Which isn’t good news for Randall. Randall has a secret. A big secret. And hanging out with the likes of Kron Darkbow and Belgad the Liar isn’t likely to help him keep that secret in a city of rogues.

Road to Wrath: Book II of the Kobalos Trilogy

Kron’s troubles have only begun. Fleeing the city of Bond, Kron and Randall are heading north and east to the land of Kobalos. Why? So Randall can confront Lord Verkain, king of Kobalos, the man who wants Randall dead, dead, dead. But before the travelers can get to Kobalos they have to pass through East Ursia and the deadly Prisonlands. Peril lies at every step along Kron’s road. Enemies in front of him. Enemies behind him. Only Randall and fencing student Adara Corvus can help Kron on the road to wrath.

Dark King of the North: Book III of the Kobalos Trilogy

Finally arriving in Kobalos, Kron and his traveling companions soon find their situation is far worse than expected. Lord Verkain is preparing his army for war, perhaps the last war. Ever. The mad king has decided he is a figure out of prophecy, a figure of evil who will dominate the world. Could it be true? Only Kron Darkbow stands between Verkain showing the world he has become the Dark King of the North.

A review of the incredibly popular book in the Twilight Saga, New Moon.

Ding ding ding! Round 2. In the red corner we have Jacob “The Wolfman” Black backed by his werewolf crew and in the red corner we have Edward “The Bloodsucker” Cullen backed up by his family of vampires.

If you hadn’t guess by that little intro I put together, or read the first book in the Twilight Saga, the second book in the internationally best-selling series is focused on the strong dislike of werewolves against vampires and vice versa. New Moon sees the charming and endearing Edward Cullen crushing Bella (and our) hearts. In fact, without giving too much away, it’s how the book begins. That’s right, heartache from the get-go.

After a birthday party, for Bella,of course (the vampires don’t age) goes awry (shall we say)Edward and his family decide to up and leave the tiny town of Forks to leave the poor girl in peace. But oh no, this is not what Miss Swan wants, she would rather be surrounded by attractive, pale-skinned vampires all day as her and Edward are in love (spoiler!) And so, what’s a girl to do when her boyfriend abandons her?Well, she seeks comfort in Jacob ,a vampire hating, werewolf’s arms! This is where it really gets interesting.

Stephenie (Meyer, the author) uses the strongly developed character backgrounds to shape and mould exactly how the reader would expect Bella to respond to Edward’s departure. Her captivating use of description in the book enables the reader to have a deep understanding of everything that’s going on at every single moment, never leaving you even a little confused. The whole story right from the start when the Cullen’s first leave, to the middle where Bella & Jacob get closer, to even the very end where things take a drastic turn for the worse, where it could turn into the end of (a love) life as Bella knows it.

Albeit the rather complex and depressing story Meyer still manages to stay right on the ball without ever faltering , sharing the same passion for the story as the very readers at home. And frankly, that’s what makes it such a good book.

This collection of Sword and Sorcery stories features some mighty tall tales, and some big monsters. It's also about the terrain and territories these monsters find themselves in.

It’s with more than a little glee that I got to read Rage of the Behemoth, a collection of 21 Sword and Sorcery short stories featuring gigantic monsters. I like Sword and Sorcery. I like big monsters. And most importantly, I like the editor, Jason M. Waltz of Rogue Blades Entertainment, who I’ve had the pleasure to work with a few times, including when he published my story “Deep in the Land of the Ice and Snow” in the Return of the Sword anthology in 2008. Another nice thing about short story collections is I don’t feel the need to read the whole thing all at once; I can read a story or two, then go read a novel or something else, then get back to the collection.

Not only is Rage of the Behemoth about big monsters, but it’s also about the terrain and territories these monsters find themselves in. This anthology is broken up into five sections, Depthless Seas, Frozen Wastes, Scalding Sands, Mysterious Jungles and Ageless Mountains. In each section you will find tales of heroes and the beasts they must face.

Of the 21 stories found within Rage of the Behemoth, I had some favorites. Below are three that stood out for me.

Beyond the Reach of his Gods, by Brian Ruckley

This was my favorite of all the stories found here, but that’s not surprising considering Brian Ruckley is also author of “The Godless World” trilogy of epic fantasy novels. This tale was of my liking because it seemed the most like old Sword and Sorcery tales by such writers as Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber and the like. This story is of Rhuan the Exile and his ship’s crew he leads into the depths of a very foreign and deadly jungle. Dangers along the way include dart-tossing and arrow-shooting natives, and also black magic that produces … something big. I won’t give away what the particular behemoth is in this tale, but I will say that poor Rhuan is tested to his limits.

The Rotten Bones Rattle, by C. L. Werner

This story stood out for me because it’s beastie is quite a bit different from that of any other found in this collection and because the protagonist, samurai Shintaro Oba, is much different from any other in this collection. The tale felt as if it could come right out of the legends of ancient Japan, with samurai, ninja, katanas and … another big, nasty monster, perhaps the most frightening one of all to be found in Rage of the Behemoth. If you like fantasy with an Asian theme, this story should be right for you.

Nothing Left of the Man, by Jeff Stewart

This is a tale of Sigurd Grimbrow. Of course there’s a monster to be found here, but eventually this tale is more about the monsters within each of us must face than it is about the monsters without in the rest of the world. Here, Sigurd and his companions come upon a village under attack by a great beast. What else would mighty warriors do but attempt to hunt down the monster? Has a sad, but surprising end to it.

Final Words

One other thing I wanted to mention about this anthology of short stories is that there are six different covers available. You can buy your favorite or you can purchase all six for collecting. Below is the basic cover, one that includes a snapshot from each of the other five covers. Of the other five covers, each one represents one of the five terrains found within the collection, though each book contains all 21 stories regardless of which cover it has.

If you love stories of sword-slinging action with a little magic and big creatures tossed in, this collection will get you cheering.

Image via Wikipedia

Will there be another Harry Potter novel? After reading the seventh Harry Potter book many fans were left anxious and wanting more. J.K Rowling then released a new book called the tales of beedle the bard. It had nothing to do with Harry Potter, but it was set in the same magical world. The short book separated in three stories was great for the fans, but it made us want even more. J.K Rowling calls her time with Harry “one of the longest relationships of my adult life,” this shows how much she loved the Harry Potter series, and maybe will want to write more about them. When J.K Rowling was asked how she felt about finishing the seventh novel she said “I don’t think anyone has mourned more than I have. It’s left the most enormous gaping hole in my life.” This should help fans grief, knowing that J.K Rowling is just as sad as them about the end. When asked about the possible eighth Harry Potter book she says “There have been times since finishing, weak moments, when I’ve said, ‘Yeah, all right,’ to the eighth novel.” But she also said “If, and it’s a big if, I ever write an eighth book about the [wizarding ] world, I doubt that Harry would be the central character. I feel like I’ve already told his story. But these are big ifs. Let’s give it 10 years and see how we feel then.” Fans will just have to wait and Hope she writes another Harry Potter book. In the meantime she is working on two books an adult novel and a political fairy tale. Who knows maybe her knew books will be just as good as the Harry Potter books? Maybe even better? This is a big question to which only J.K Rowling can change the answer.

Though fantasy may be considered a pulpy shelf genre that serious readers should avoid, there are several books out there that have merits beyond most. This list takes almost a decade of reading fantasy and suggests 10 series' or books that stand out above the cut, making for a memorable read for anyone who loves to read.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

This should probably go without saying, but this series is the epitome of high fantasy. Without it, we probably would not even have it as a genre. It is a well-written series as well, so for those of us who only read books with literary merits, these are good ones. It is a story that defines good and evil fairly succinctly but what it truly shows us is the hardships of holding true to one’s goals. Look at all the times Frodo almost gave up the One Ring, and yet he didn’t. There’s a lot we can learn from this series beyond imagination and good writing.

The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K. LeGuin

LeGuin has been writing speculative fiction for so long it’s no wonder that her works have received so many literary merits she would need a separate apartment to store them all. Perhaps not her greatest work, but certainly a good one, the Earthsea Trilogy really shows what this writer can do. Not following the High Fantasy structure based around a talisman (jewel, sword, one ring etc.) it instead follows the personal journey of Ged, a young wizard who learns humility from his own mistakes. Many of LeGuin’s books are based on personal discovery, and this series does it better than most. Definitely a must read on anybody’s list.

The RiddleMaster Trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip

This series is my personal favorite. There is nothing more unique than a story written by McKillip but this one is just amazing. In a world based around answering riddles, one young prince could call himself a Riddle Master. This trilogy follows his journey to discover who he is, and where the high lord of the realm has disappeared. My description really cannot do the story justice, because everything about the story is different from the basic formula for a fantasy novel, which typically follows the structure that Tolkien laid out years before. Just believe me when I say that this is an incredible, thought-provoking, and unique experience that every reader should partake in.

The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny

Though intended to be a science fiction novel, and certainly there are aspects in it, it really falls under the fantasy genre, delving into the realm of magic and high aristocracy. The idea behind the series is that there is only one true world, Amber, and every other world, including earth, is a shadow world of it, a parallel universe if you will. This is where the science fiction part comes into the play. The royal family of Amber has the ability to traverse these shadows, and even create shadows of their own. While many of the shadows that the main character, Corwin journeys through are entirely made up, some, like Earth and Avalon, will be familiar to the reader. The story is a roller coaster ride of intrigue, political battles, and right out war, a must read for any avid fantasy reader.

The Sword of Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

What would a fantasy book list be without some Terry Brooks on it? By many he is considered to be the prominent mythcrafter of our generation. I list the Sword of Shannara not because it is his best work, but because it is his first work. None of his other books based in the world he has created would make any sense without reading the first three. The first book, The Sword of Shannara, is really an obvious spin off of the Lord of the Rings, but as the series progresses the books get more and more unique, to the point where a magical song is all that is there to combat an ancient evil. A very cool series indeed, and if it hooks your interest, please read The Heritage of Shannara, which is, in my own opinion, a superior series.

Grendel by John Gardner

What an incredible book! Most of you are familiar with Beowulf, the heroic struggle against the monster Grendel, but we only hear it from the point of view of the people, not the monster. John Gardner decided that was hardly fair and wrote a book from the monster’s point of view. You discover that Grendel was not nearly so mindless as we supposed, and that he is truly a philosophical being, trying to discover his place in the world. The book deals with some pretty heavy topics, chief of which asks the question “Do we live in a moral universe?” Not the easiest of reads but definitely a must for all readers of fiction, be it fantasy or not.

The First Three Books of The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

I have a particular bias with these books. I loved the first three books, which were very unique and a veritable thrill ride of dark magic and prophecy. But the problem with the series is that there end up being so many characters that you can read 500 pages before you return to the main character. And the books keep getting longer and longer, going well over 1000 pages. I attend college full time and work as well, I don’t have time to sit down and read a gigantic tome. But I put this series down because it is very good, at least while there are only 10 notable characters or so. If you like that sort of thing then by all means read the entire series, you won’t be disappointed.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Children’s literature and Christian undertones be damned, this is a fine series for any age. Most of you are familiar with the movies, but the books are quite fantastic. A simple read for anyone of nine years or so, but a heavy series, full of good life lessons and good stories. I cannot say much more about the series, I think everyone should read it and that’s really all there is to it.

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander

Another series that is considered to be a child’s series but definitely a must for any reader of any age. You don’t see many books nowadays that ignore the existentialist movement and make you glad to be a decent human being. The characters are well developed and some are very cute, having a particular catch phrase that makes you smile every time you read it. A journey of self discovery for Taran, who after several journeys with a princess, hopes to discover royalty in his blood. Each book has an unpredictable plot twist that will leave you thinking. A fantastic read.

The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings

Eddings has written so many books it’s hard to pick just one to put on the list, but when push comes to shove, The Redemption of Althalus is an incredible book, with some really cool twists on magic and comradery. You follow Althalus, a thief and a rogue who makes his living robbing people blind. He considers himself incredibly lucky and for awhile it seems to be true. One day his luck runs sour and in the end he is forced to take a job from a mysterious stranger, just to make ends meet. He is asked to retrieve a book. Little does Althalus know that this retrieval is the catalyst for a journey that will last thousands of years. A witty and overall pleasant piece of adult literature.
