Anne of Green Gables

A review of Lucy M. Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables”.

High hopes and great expectations for the future are what most great people have in their early lives. These ideas can be understood in the delightful, and heart-warming fiction novel, Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

Anne Shirley, an imaginative, talkative, and humorous girl had lived in an orphanage on Prince Edward Island, Canada in the 1900’s for quite a while. She hoped to one day enjoy a fruitful, pleasant life and was adopted, quite by accident, by two elderly people, the Cuthberts. Afterward there was quite some uncertainty as to whether she should be kept at green gables, their home on a farm, or not. This subject required thought, especially after the horrid way she acted when a very critical neighbor commented on her red hair. Yet her generally cheerful and optimistic nature won the favor of her caretakers and she remained at green gables. Anne now tries to fit in and get ahead in her studies to the best of her ability. She also contends with a boy named Gilbert Blythe, another person who judges her hair. This great and awkward event leads them to compete against each other for the best grades, Anne hoping to be the more successful. Other situations arise where Anne makes horrible mistakes and self-redemption is her only option.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful book. Anne’s lovable and humorous character assists her in remaining in the hearts of readers and all other characters that she comes across. Her imagination leads her into trouble often but her chief goal remains the same; be the best that she can be. This book is a must-read for fiction lovers and people who just want to belong.

I just wanted to say that this was one of my favourite books growing up and it still is. In fact I just finished re-reading it last month. I definitely would recommend this book. I am also quite proud that the author and the setting takes place in Canada where I am from.
