Book Review: Burned by Ellen Hopkins

Burned, written by Ellen Hopkins is a worth the read novel full of excitement, tragedy and surprise. Written in verse, every page is set up creatively. Hopkins verse style of novel writing is a very exciting new way of reading and writing.

Hopkins book shows the life of a Mormon girl; Pattyn Scarlet Von Stratten. Pattyn is tired of the Mormon lifestyle and rebels against her family and the rules of her home and church. Her father spends most of the time drunk and angry and her mother has a whole household to take care of.

After Pattyn gets in a fight and breaks glass, her family has had enough of her rebelling so they send her to live with her Aunt, out in the middle of nowhere, for the summer, so she can no longer get in trouble.

It turns out that she has fun on her stay with her aunt, she learns how to drive and ride a horse, and meets the love of her life. She fell in love with Ethan, the son of her aunts friend. He is not Mormon and her father would kill the both of them if they were together.

After returning home things start to go bad again. She mouths off to her father and gets beaten. She takes the rap for something her sister does, and gets beaten to save her life. She also learns that she will have Ethan’s baby.

Like all of Hopkins novels, Burned also has a tragic ending. Ethan and Pattyn get in a car wreck and she wakes up in the hospital to learn that she lost Ethan and her baby. In the end she says that God could not be love because love was a corpse, because she lost the love of her life, and the only thing remnant of him.

It was a great book until the last 20 pages….I’m a fan of happy ending cause books are my get-away from the real world,so I thought the ending sucked. So I wrote a new one… and I suggest you do that too[unless you liked the the ending of course].

I find all of her books interesting, but I agree about the ending being disappointing. Sometimes just got to remember life does not always turn out like a fairytale, so all writers are not going to write that way.

This book was amazing! I have never offically completed a book, And this was the first offical book that I can say I read all the way through. Each page was more exciting then the next. I couldnt put it down. But The ending pissed me off. errrr I mean why couldnt she just end it with pattyn and ethan being together. I mean pattyn deserved something good and its ruined..lol bad ending ellen hopkins!

i have to say, this book was incredible! ellen hopkins is such an inspiration and her style really grasps my attention. a few of my friends hated that pattyn and ethan didnt get to be together, but i think thats what makes hopkins’ books so good; the “real-ness” in them. she really wakes us up with reality, many of us dont enjoy reading about sad endings but, its life and i’m glad somebody isnt afraid to write about it. good job:)

I was so amazed by this book, though I’m only 13, it doesn’t mean I didn’t get any of the sex parts, it was actually awesome knowing that these kind of books exist, ’cause I thought that all authors can only use the right language as in without cussing, and by these books by Ellen Hopkins, I really felt the emotions or the anger of the characters and it expanded my imagination. It was really worth it :) I love all Ellen Hopkins’ books :x

I thought this book was one of the best I’ve ever read…until the end. What happened to closure and happy endings? If you can’t find those things in a book where can you find them? Is this the kind of hopelessness that everyone is doomed to? Are we supposed to lose it all like Pattyn did? If this is reality, I wish that I hadn’t read this book and discovered it.

Not that I try to hide from tragedy, but I hated the ending. Not only did Pattyn lose someone she loved, but she lost all hope, and everything that she believed in. This was a girl who truly deserved to have something amazing, and she didn’t get it. She’d never get that chance, and would always be stuck with something she needed desperately to escape. Thats what I found most tragic about this story.

i loved burned, i thought it was brilliant. i was sad by the ending, it made me feel sick and depressed. i thought it was real though, not everything ends happy. i love how her novels are very unique, and filled with the unexpected. ellen hopkins is a huge inspiration. my stomache sinks everytime i think about the book though. loved it anyways though, its a “masterpiece”.

I just finished the book, literally. oh man, it made me CRY!! the ending was dramatic. what a twist. everyone seems to be hating the ending, but it is a good change on “happily ever after”. I was looking for the official ending actually. Still not quite sure. like, does she die and or kill other people?
    I dont know.(??)
Anyways, some of the sentences were very beautiful and well put together. They were not sappy at all.
And also i liked the set up :)

I bought this book yesterday night and finished it right when I woke up. It really is amazing. Of course, I cryed at the end. I would have been more satisfied if it didn’t end like that, but I still liked the ending since it wasn’t like anything I’ve read before. But what I wanted for atleast was a miracle to happen and for her baby to live and her aunt to help her raise it. Anyway, it was the first book I read from Hopkins and I can’t wait to catch up on all her other ones. [ The wierd thing is, I have a friend who fits the exact description of how Patyn looks so I just thought about her all through the book. Haha! (: ]

I loved this book and the fact that it was pretty easy to read since it was written in verse. I was angry at the ending at first because I had just finished 1984 which ended unhappy also. I just don’t understand if she ended up killing all the people she said she was, herself, or just her dad. Maybe we’re not meant to know. As much as I was initially disappointed in the ending, I realize that it made the book real. After all shes been through, I would have snapped way before Pattyn did.

Ellen Hopkin’s books are amazing whether
you have done drugs or not. There are ways
in which you find yourself relating to the
book and I think that’s awesome. I loved Burned.
Yes, the ending was disappointing and it brought
reality back into this amazing dream Pattyn felt
    she was in.

One of my favorite lines in the book is from Ethan:
“You’re like the ocean, Pattyn. Pretty enough on the surface, but dive down into your depths, you’ll find beauty most people never see. Lucky me, I fell in, headfirst.”

I was like, wowwwww. I like that, haha.

well i know that the book is probably good, i mean i haven’t read it yet. but just because bad things happen doesnt mean that god doesn’t love you. sometimes its just a persons time to go. and also, being mormon doesn’t mean that you can’t lead a happy life. i would know. i have the best life i could ever wish for and i’m happily mormon. religion doesn’t restrict you. you restrict you.

And I wanted to cry in the beginning, when she is talking about droning out the sounds of her mother’s screams :l Not all books have happy endings, and I’m not disappointed that this one had a sad ending. Means the author isn’t afraid to make it a sad story. But I definitely recommend this book!

This book is reminder after reminder on every page bound between two thin covers reaching out, asking to be read. Its a reminder of true life, and what its deepest hells can be, a reminder that to rise up you must first believe you can, and that ultimately, without love, or at least the hope for it, life is wasted. The ending is painful but yet, another vivid reminder. Life is a reality, fairytales will never last.

I had just finished the book (read it all today, actually) and I have to say that it is indeed an amazing book. It brings out true emotion that you yourself can feel.

I’ve never read a book written in verses, and I’m glad I had. Despite the tragic ending. (Which made me upset, nonetheless).

But as stated before, life isn’t a fairytale. Soon enough reality bites you in the butt and Ellen Hopkins did just that.

This book was absolutely incredable. Evey high and low kept me interested. And I thought Hopkins did a phenomenal job with the entire book, including the ending. Although it wasn’t a happ ending, that’s what i liked about it because in the real world most people don’t get their happily ever after. Hopkins made this book real, as she does with her other novels.

And nicala, to me that line ment would her father say “i love you” if she was holding a gun to his head and if he did would it change her mind about shooting him? then she says she wouldnt change her mind. BUt that is a good question, i had to read that part a few times to completely understand.

I just got the book over the week end and could not put it down. I loved it but the ending was just as if Ellen decided “I’m Done” there were so many questions that were unanswered. I did not want the sappy fairytale ending but it was just so depressing and sad that she lost everything and was going to kill everyone she ever knew.

OMG this book was amazing! Very sad ending, but I think that’s what makes it such a great book. Ellen Hopkins is such a great author, she writes about realistic things. I’ve only read Burned, Crank and Identical, but all of them have made an impact, especially Crank. Only because I can relate to that book. I still think Burned is my favorite though, only because of all the emotions in this book. My fav, great job Ellen :)

I love this book to death, and can honesty relate to Pattyn.

I LOVED this book. It made me feel like it was my life that was playing out on the pages. I think that almost every girl can relate to a book like this, I know I did.
The last like 50 pages I was bawling, I couldn’t believe the ending. But it was such a good book that I have told all my friends to read it. And they all loved it too.
Ellen is an amazing writer and I have read all of her books at least three times!

I absolutely love all of Ellen Hopkins’ books. Each one has a realness to them and that makes them easy to relate to for a lot of teens and readers out there. Burned is my personal favorite because I love the romance and the religious issues that Pattyn has to deal with on her journey. Last year I went to the teen book festival not too far from my school and Ellen Hopkins was there for a book signing. I asked her what she meant at the end of the book, if Pattyn jumped (which I thought) or shot her father or the list of people she described on on e of the last pages. Hopkins confessed that she had never thought to think that it seemed Pattyn jumped the way she wrote the ending. She said she wanted it to seem like she was pondering revenge. When I asked her if she was thinking about a sequel to this one, she said she wasn’t sure yet, but if she did, it would possibly be about Pattyn using her sharp shooting skills..if you know what I mean…lol. Hope this cleared up the ending for a lot of you fans out there! And Ellen Hopkins rocks!!!! lol =P

Loved the book; disliked the ending. I don’t understand how after all she went threw in the end she still end up with nothing to hope for, no where to go. I cried; even though it was just a book it’s sad to think that there is someone out there with a life similar to the story. Most people are very blessed in this life and others not so much. I wished she would’ve gotten away with Ethan and put her fater away or get him help.
But I guess as everyone says you can’t always have happy endings, because most of the time it’s not reality, and it sucks. =)
And yes i’m a little late on reading it but ole well.

the mother does have a whole household to attend to, but she doesn’t. she leaves it all up to pattyn. this book is amazingly amazing. if you don’t like the ending you can suck my toe because that’s how life is. you can always try to get something positive out of negatives, but you’re always gonna end off on a sour note. there is always momentary happiness, but that is just fleeting. ellen hopkins is an amazing writer. all of her books are flawless.

i love this book most say they are dissapointed in the ending but i know its sad and i bawled at the ending but thats why i like it. you get so attached to the book and get lost and then an ending like that it kinda hits you like wow. All these things can happen to one person. And Pattyn in the book has a crapy life until ethan comes along and hes is one of the only good things and hes gone. It really shows you how someone can be here one minute and gone the next and i love how she makes you feel for Pattyn in the book. To me its pure genious. when you get lost in the book you dont expect an ending like that and when you start reading it you want to pull out but you cant because you wnat to know what happens because you start to feel for her. By the way, This is my favorite book of all time

I just finished reading this book called Burned. It was truly amazing and although it clearly was no happy ending I still loved the ending. I don’t think I would have liked it as much if they turned out happy. I have never cried when reading a book; it’s a weird thing to do. I did once, I can’t remember what book it was but I was really close to crying but I didn’t. I’ll have to go and look up that title now but this book truly made me cry every time I read those lines. “No, he’s not dead! He can’t be dead! I won’t let him be dead! Oh God, not dead!” I was reading them over and over and I still couldn’t stop crying. Tear after tear built up in my eyes and came rolling down my cheek past my jaw and down to my neck. I didn’t even want to wipe them away, it felt good to cry. Sometimes I like the feeling of just letting out in quiet tears. And I’ve stopped crying only because I am not reading it. I did go back to read it but I could only built them up, they just wouldn’t come down. I went back in the book to my favorite parts, when they first kiss and when he first tells her he loves her. And when they made love and then I went back to the ending. And reading those lines again made me cry like a baby. I have always been able to hold back tears in front of my parents but when they walked in while I was reading I couldn’t do it. They came down like a waterfall and they wouldn’t stop coming. This is the greatest book I have ever read.

I wrote this in this journal thing but anyway. I don’t care if no one reads this just as long as I get my opinion on this book out there. I realize there was no real ending at least from my view and even though that part wasn’t so good I loved the ending. Even if it made me cry like a baby. If this book didn’t have that ending I don’t think anyone would have liked it as much. Amazing job Ellen Hopkins.

I’m not saying the ending was bad, I’m not opposed to sad endings. But it was horribly written. There was absolutely no closure. If you’re suddenly going to kill everyone important in the book and send the main character into a death spiral, hinting that she might take others down with her, it might be a good idea to say at least some of what happened. The way she wrote it was completely unsatisfying and ruined the entire book for me.

honestly i dont like most books cuz they are never really good and captivating, but i loved this book. Even though it was a sad ending i think it would have SUCKED without him dying. It shows life is not always a happy ending. the ending kept true to the dramatic setting the book had. I wish i knew if she really killed those people though. it was a cliff hanger where you didn’t need 1. I loved the message. Even though she didn’t get a happily ever after Pattyn learned to hold on to happiness when it comes for as long as you can.

This book was definitely my favorite out of hers. Identical and Glass were also incredible, but neither one of them made me get as emotional as Burned did. Contrary to others’ opinions, I loved the ending. I greatly enjoy a good tragedy and none of Hopkins’ books ended with the same sense of hopelessness that Burned did. It was enough to make me want to cry. Any author that makes their readers feel such emotion is incredibly talented. I love books that have either very happy or very sad endings, anything halfway is just unsatisfying. This fell under the sad category, but it was amazing all the same. I also find Ethan’s love throughout the book to be the sweetest I have read about in a long time. Great job, Ellen Hopkins.

This book was amazing! I couldn’t put it down! When I finished it I just read it again. I was heart broken like most of you when Ethan died. It’s like Payttn never knows love until ethan finds her but then she loses him and love. It just goes to show that life isn’t fair. The one thing that I did not like at all though was that Ellen Hopkins was pretty much saying Life doesn’t go on once you lose the one you love and that life is not worth living. And trust me that is not true. My mom lost my dad when i was at a very young age and she knows my dad wouldn’t want her to be sad or not to live life to the fullest. other than that part I would love for her to right more books like burned because it’s the best book I have ever read!

Most of Ellen Hopkins books have a sad ending. All her books to me were good but burned was my favorite because it was the first book to have made me cry, and trust me i’ve read some sad books. Mrs. Hopkins book made me cry because of the story of Pattyn’s forever love and the heart breaking ending of Ethen’s death. I mean to read about a girl who finds a guy that is gorgeous, loves her, willing to leave his studys to marry her, and wants to take care of there unborn child (And lets be real girls, there is no guy like that out there) and to have him die in a car accident was to overwhelming. Ellen Hopkin’s Burned was a story worth reading.

It never really says if she killed anyone. It just says that she wants to get back at all those people and at the end it leaves off with her thinking about it….

I thought the book was amazing.
Of course I Cried. But is still loved the ending either way.
    Kind of ironic and unexpected.

Well I have to say this I’ve read Crank, Glass, and Impulse. I’ve never finished a book in my life. I’d forget about them about half way through. I heard my friends talking about these books and to this day I could never not finish Ellen C. Hopkins books they’re amazing and I don’t think I could ever read a better book they’re inspiring, interesting I love her books she needs to make more

I like all of Ellan Hopkins’ books. Especially Crank and Identical. This one was terribly sad, but it does not explain the ending very well. Are you supposed to guess for yourself? I hope she actually does kill her father. For some reason, I think that would make the book better. Although it’s really depressing after that she kills herself. (If she does.)
