Collecting Comics – a Begginers Guide
A simple guide on collecting comics written by somebody rather new on the comic book scene.
So you want to collect comics?
Collecting comics can be a fun and fullfilling hobby for people of all ages and backgrounds. Collecting comic books is also a very easy hobby to get started with compared to others, all you need is some bags and boards to store your comics in (I personally reccomend Ultra PRO Silver Size Bags and Ultra Pro Silver Age boards) and a bit of spare change to head down to your local comic book store with.
Where to start?
Starting up with collecting anything can seem like a daunting task and with the thousands upon thousands of comics out there it can really leave alot of new collectors puzzled. My best advice would to be collect what you like, I can guarantee that if your reading this article you have heard of a few superheroes and may have a base knowledge from films or maybe the odd comic here and there. Personally I am a fan of Green Arrow and Deathstroke.
There are also comics that are classed as Golden age, these comics are very old and if looked after correctly can turn a nice little profit in the long run.
Keeping the comics safe
Some people leave there comics scattered around there house whereas others will keep them in temperature controlled room to create a perfect environment for them. Most collectors however are content with just bagging and boarding there comics and packing them into a safe box, this will keep them safe from damages and leave them easily accessible if you ever feel like a quick read.
You can find the essentials to keeping your comics safe at your local comic store or if there isnt a comic store in your area you can use eBay.
Grading and smart investments
The grading of a comic tells you of its current condition, The higher the number the better the comic. Grading can be a smart investment if you have some rare comics and can also make a nice addition to your collection.
New collectors shouldnt worry themselves with graded comics, they can easily loose alot of money that they should be spending on other things.
Overall
In this short article, I hope to have explained to you the basics of starting your collection. You should spend your time searching eBay and local comic stores for the storys and superheroes that you like and concentrate on stocking up on them. You should try set aside some money every week so you can pick up a steady amount of comics. Over the coming weeks your collection will grow and grow and in time you will be a bonafide comic collector. Good luck kid!
