The Great Pretenders and Other Stories by Julia Wertz is a mini comic that explores many of Wertz’s childhood flights on fancy. The stories range from the outrageously funny antics of children to a bit more on the serious side, such as when the family lost a baby and had to cope with it in different ways.
Wertz has a unique way of expressing memoir moments in her comics. While many of us may have similar stories to tell from our childhoods, the way that Wertz can tell her own stories through her drawings, (sometimes) offbeat humor and sincerity always makes me want to read more.
If you have read Julia Wertz’s previous work, there is a slight overlap with this mini comic. Some of the stories have been told in previous publications, but devoted fans will flock to this mini in order to get the new stuff.
