Love Twilight? Then You Should Read This
Fans of Twilight have plenty of fiction choices to draw their attention as the celebrated vampire book series and film attracts a new audience. A host of vampire lit aimed at teens awaits readers eager for more fantasies.
As Twilight conquers young audiences, eager fans can find more vampire and fantasy lit to feed their cravings. A thriving teen industry for fantasy and goth lit includes dozens of recognizable authors and a host of novels inspired by the same themes as Twilight.
For young adult readers, Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series explores mature themes from the perspective of young vampires schooled in the ways of their world. With stories revolving around depression, sexuality, and other hard-core issues, it’s not a series for younger readers, but older audience members may prefer to be swept into the angst-driven vampire saga.
Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampires series appeals to younger readers despite the college-age characters. With less language and sexuality than Mead’s series, the characters offer a lighter vampire series infused with elements of goth, mystery, and youth issues.
Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber appeals to younger readers with its relationship-driven story of lovelorn and lonely goth teens with a vampire twist. Although somewhat heavy and over-emotional, most likely eliminating any tweens or young adults, many teenagers will find the story both dark and romantically satisfying.
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, widely recognized for her vampire lit, takes a departure in the fantasy world with her Kiesha’ra series, in which shape shifting humans are pitted against their own problems and each other in a struggle between human and animal instincts. For fans who love fantasy (and Rhodes’ vampire work) this series provides a bridge between goth literature and fantasy fun.
