Milkweed’s Vocabulary

Some useful terms to help you understand the book more clearly.

  • Jackboots – A person who uses bullying tactics, especially to force compliance. (Bully).
  • Pharmacist – A person licensed to prepare and dispense drugs and medicines.
  • Himmler – German Nazi leader. Second in power to Hitler, he directed the Nazi elite forces, the SS.
  • Swaggered – To walk or conduct oneself with an insolent or arrogant air; strut.
  • Pendulum – A body suspended from a fixed support so that it swings freely back and forth under the influence of gravity, commonly used to regulate various devices, especially clocks.
  • Flailing – To wave or swing vigorously; thrash. (Flail)
  • Blotted – To darken; make dim; obscure or eclipse (Blot).
  • Flamethrower – A weapon either mounted or portable, that sprays ignited incendiary fuel for some distance.
  • Glint – A tiny, quick flash of light. (Flash).
  • Fiery – Consisting of, attended with, characterized by, or containing fire. (Burning).
  • Veering – To turn aside from a course, direction, or purpose; swerve. (Veer).
  • Deport – To send or carry off; transport, esp. forcibly. (Expel).
  • Smokestack – A pipe for the escape of the smoke or gases of combustion, as on a steamboat, locomotive, or building. (Vent).
  • Resettlement – The transportation of people as a family or colony to a new settlement. (Immigration).
  • Groped – To feel about with the hands; feel one’s way. (Grope).
  • Silhouette – A dark image outlined against a lighter background. (Outline).
  • Mimicking – To imitate or copy in action, speech, often playfully or derisively. (Copy).
  • Locomotives – A self-propelled vehicle, usually electric or diesel-powered, for pulling or pushing freight or passenger cars on railroad tracks. (Locomotive).
  • Trudging – A laborious or tiring walk; tramp. (Trudge).
  • Hawking – The act of selling goods for a living. (Salesman).
